OAKLAND, Calif. –The Academy of Art baseball team received two excellent starting pitching efforts from junior
Ryan Skillman and senior
Matthew Sanchez, but received different results in a doubleheader split with Holy Names on Sunday.
Each starter turned in a quality start for the Urban Knights (3-5), with Skillman getting the win against the Hawks (8-5) in game one with a complete game effort. He allowed two runs, only one earned, on four hits with six strikeouts and six walks, both season highs. Sanchez followed with a dominant 8.0+ inning start of his own, giving up just one unearned run while striking out seven and walking two in what was originally slated to be a seven-inning game but would wind up lasting 10.
Keeping up his hot start to the season was sophomore catcher
Ryan Gamboa, going a combined 4-for-8 with four RBIs and a double, moving his current hit streak to four games. Junior outfielder
Dominic Chavarria got base knocks in both games, going a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two walks. Despite not getting a hit in game two, senior second baseman
Thomas Delgadillo extended his streak of reaching base, as he has done so in all eight games this season and 26 games dating back to last season. He finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and a walk.
GAME 1 – ART U 3, HNU 2
Like they have done nearly all of this young season, the Urban Knights got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout from junior outfielder
Ty Conrad, his second RBI of the series.
Holy Names would get a pair of runners aboard with back-to-back walks with one out in the top of the second before an error would load the bases, and Cameron Vollmer would capitalize with a sacrifice fly to even the game.
A bunt single and two walks would load the bases for Gamboa, who produced a single on a 1-1 pitch through the left side to score two runs, giving them insurance that they would end up needing. One of the six Skillman walks in the game came with the bases loaded to plate a run for the Hawks, but he then got the next batter to hit into a lineout double play to end the frame.
It would take 146 pitches for Skillman to finish the complete game and move his record to 1-1, becoming the ninth pitcher in ART U history to go the distance. The loss would fall to Jiovanni Saavedra, his first of the season to drop his record to 1-1, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 4.2 innings pitched.
Leading the way was Delgadillo, scoring two of ART U's three runs in a 2-for-2 effort with a walk. Gamboa was 1-for-3 in game one, knocking in two runs. For HNU, Robbie McIntosh was 2-for-3 with a run, while Morgan McIntosh was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
GAME 2 – HNU 4, ART U 2 (10 INNINGS)
It didn't take long for Gamboa to get the scoring started, driving home a run on an RBI double into right center field to score junior first baseman
Vincent Lontz after he reached on a fielder's choice.
It wasn't until the fifth when HNU would answer the early run, when a passed ball with the bases loaded would bring home the unearned run. ART U's Sanchez would continue to dazzle for a few more innings before giving way to senior pitcher
Galen Manhard, with Manhard coming up big upon his entrance. With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the ninth inning, Manhard would strikeout the side with two looking strikeouts to keep the game tied at 1-1.
The 10th inning would be a different story, as he would surrender three runs on six hits to HNU as they would take the lead. A bases loaded single would plate the first run before newly-entered Joe Olvera would drive in two on a single into center. All six outs that Manhard recorded were strikeouts.
A double down the left field line by Chavarria would get the bottom of the frame started, and three batters later Chavarria would score on a RBI single into center from Gamboa. The rally would be short lived, as the game would end with the next batter grounding into a double play.
Taking the win with only one run allowed on three hits in two innings for the Hawks was Christopher Gann, as he improves to 3-0. Manhard would end up with the loss, his second of the year.
It was a 3-for-5 finish in game two of the twin bill for Gamboa, driving in two runs in the process in his second three-hit game of the year. Chavarria would end with a multi-hit game as well, ending 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
Three players would notch 2-hit games, while Joe Olvera would produce the game-winning RBIs with a hit in his only at bat.
The Urban Knights will return to the diamond on Friday when they start a four-part series with Saint Martin's that begins at 7 p.m.
