TURLOCK, Calif. – Despite answering Cal State East Bay's strong second quarter with a rally to come within a single basket in the third, Academy of Art women's basketball could not complete the comeback inside Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena as the Warrior Classic tipped off Friday evening.
Senior guard
Lauryn Manns attacked the rim early, scoring ART U's first three points, but lead changes and ties occurred frequently until the score returned even at 13-13 by the end of the first quarter on a jumper from freshman guard
Madison Johnson along with a free throw from sophomore guard
Jadence Clifton.
The contest's fifth tie score came in the opening minutes of the second quarter at 15-15 before the Pioneers built their largest lead to that stage up 29-19. A 3-pointer from the hands of junior guard
Ashana Hinds helped keep the margin at single digits and, despite three more points from Clifton before the end of the half, CSUEB's lead was 36-25 going into the locker room.
Clifton converted a three-point play to start the third quarter and shortly thereafter a 9-2 run keyed by scores from Clifton, sophomore forward/center
Alisha Wilson, Manns, and Hinds brought the Knights to within two at 39-37. Cal State East Bay, however, proceeded to steadily gain a 17-point advantage midway through the fourth frame until back-to-back layups by sophomore forward/center
Christy Ojide. The Pioneers maintained the rest of the way for the 64-47 result.
Academy of Art, now 0-3 overall this season, was led by Clifton's game-high 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field plus three rebounds and two steals. Manns provided seven points with five rebounds and three steals to match Hinds' seven points as well. Though Wilson did not log her third consecutive double-double, she racked up four steals to go with eight rebounds and six points. Every Urban Knight to play in the game registered at least one steal, contributing to the team's season-best 13 thefts in the contest.
Cal State East Bay rises to 2-1 on the year after getting 15 points from Grace Campbell as well as 12 points from Jaela Richardson.
Returning to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena in less than 24 hours, ART U will finish the Warrior Classic with a 3 p.m. matchup versus tournament host Stanislaus State.
