ALOHA PACWEST SEASON OPENER

Pacific West Conference play is upon us as Academy of Art women's soccer will play their first PacWest matches of their 2024 season. The Urban Knights will travel to three straight conference matches as they battle against UH Hilo, Chaminade, and Hawai'i Pacific starting on Tuesday.

KICKOFF
ART U kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024 at 3 p.m. HT (6 p.m. PST) against UH Hilo, then Friday, Oct. 4, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. HT (3:30 p.m. PST) versus Chaminade, and closes out the homestand on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024 at 3 p.m. HT (6 p.m. PST) with Hawai'i Pacific. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights via the athletics app (Apple App Store, Google Play Store) and on Twitter & Instagram as well as "Like" the Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps.

Zeena GrewalKNIGHT WATCH
Freshman defender Mia Gonzalez scored the first goal of her collegiate career in her last match with Jessup on Sept. 25, which is good to lead the team in points while junior forward Danielle Medellin sits right behind her, back by a point. Gonzalez and sophomore forward/midfielder Anna Del Carlo are the only two Urban Knights who have seen all 450 minutes of 2024 thus far, while freshman midfielder Zeena Grewal and sophomore forward Jade Alverio are next up as the pair have shot 12 shots between them, with the majority in favor of the latter. Half of Alverio's shots have found their way on target, as she holds a .500 shot on goal percentage with Medellin not far off going 3-for-7 with her .429.

Graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples has already put up big numbers in her four matches played with 34 saves and a .810 save percentage, putting her at second and fourth place respectively in the PacWest Conference rankings. Though it was sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Hampton who got the start against Jessup, both options would be nice starts for ART U as Hampton led the conference in saves per game (7.55) just a season ago in 2023.

DISBAND THE VULCANS
Remaining undefeated through six matches on the season is UH Hilo (4-0-2), having tied their first two matchups in scoreless draws before defeating their next four opponents with a 9-1 goal differential, shutting out three straight within that time frame. At least one member represents the Vulcans in most shots, shots on goal, and goals in the PacWest Conference rankings with Teani Arakawa leading the team with four goals to start the season. Phoebe Barnes will be in goal for UHH as she has earned herself a current second place ranking in saves percentage within the conference, with her .938 as she's saved 15 shots with just one goal allowed. Winners of the last six, UH Hilo leads the all-time series over the Urban Knights, 13-2-1.

CLASHING WITH CHAMINADE
Dropping their last two matches in 1-0 defeats to their fellow PacWest Hawaiian schools, Chaminade holds a 1-2-2 record, and will host Dominican prior to their match with ART U. The 'Swords have four different goal scorers on the season all currently with one each, but Gracie Knowd leads the pack in points (3) as she has picked up an assist to go along with her score. Splitting time in goal are Izabella Holly and Jordhan Kieres as they have played about a half each in all four matches of 2024. The pair combine for a .733 save percentage as they've collected 17 total saves with five goals given up. Despite Chaminade having won each of the past four matchups, it is Academy of Art that still leads the all-time series, 9-8-0.

SHIVERING SHARKS
Also playing a match with Dominican before battling with ART U, Hawai'i Pacific has started their campaign with a 1-2 record after most recently taking a loss against UH Hilo, while taking down Chaminade 1-0 beforehand. Scoring in all three matches, HPU holds three different goal scorers so far as Lisette Almanza, Cassidy George, and Mehana Ortiz all have one apiece. Also sharing time between the sticks are Madi DePhillips and Lauren Retsky as they've each played at least one full match, but it's Retsky who has seen the most action as she's faced 45 shots while giving up six goals, while DePhillips has yet to be scored on with her one save on five shots. HPU currently leads the all-time series over ART U, 11-3-1.

GONZALEZ SCORES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL IN JESSUP CLASH
Returning to SF Glens at Treasure Island Field for the fourth match of their 2024 campaign on Sept. 25, Academy of Art women's soccer found new success, but ultimately dropped the non-conference contest with a 2-1 last Wednesday.

LOOKING AHEAD
Following their three-match Hawai'i trip, Academy of Art will return home to host Biola on Oct. 10 with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff before they return to the road to battle with Dominican thereafter on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
