TURLOCK, Calif. – Academy of Art softball had opportunities to score and more strong pitching from junior
Kamielle Powell (1-4), but SF State finished with the upper hand, winning 6-0 on Sunday's final day of the Tournament of Champions.
Carrying a 3-0 lead all on unearned runs scored in the first two innings, the Gators had a pair sat down on strikes by Powell in the third.
SF State built its advantage to 6-0 on scores in the fourth and seventh, but ART U had a comeback opportunity in the final frame as singles by senior catcher/infielder
Liberty Herrera and sophomore outfielder
Ari Mallari combined with a Powell walk to load the bases. However, the game's final out came shortly thereafter and the Gators would prevail.
Departing Tournament of Champions with a 1-10 overall record, the Urban Knights' offensive success came in the form of freshman outfielder
Danielle Shinko going 2-for-4 while junior infielder
Audrey Allen's 1-for-3 effort included her first double of the season. Meanwhile, Powell increased her current streak of consecutive innings without an earned run allowed to 16.0 with 6.0 more plus two strikeouts on Sunday.
SF State, now 11-3 on the year, relied heavily on the one-two pitching punch of Kharime Caratachea (2-2) and Xochitl Atayde who allowed no runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts across 7.0 innings of work.
This week, ART U will make its home debut against Simon Fraser with a noon doubleheader from Mission Blue Field on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
