OAKLAND, Calif. – After a complete-game, five-hit shutout from junior
Brett Bovee on
Friday night, it seemed as if no other pitcher could top his performance. Then junior
Alexander Kuisel came along.
Â
Game One: ART U 3, UH Hilo 0
Â
Sounds of the tune "I Crawl" echoed throughout the confines of Laney Field as the south paw warmed up before game two of the series with the Vulcans. Once the first pitch was thrown, Kuisel was locked in. Despite allowing a one-out double in the first, Kuisel would set down the next ten consecutive batters. After a two-out walk in the fourth, the Chula Vista native would pick up where he left off, retiring 12 more straight batters.

Â
His final hit-allowed of the game was another two-out double, this time to a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. Four outs and 11 pitchers later, Kuisel would finish his first-ever complete game shutout and the team's second in two games. The left-hander only allowed two hits compared to one walk and a career-high eight strikeouts. As the team's most successful starter as of late, Kuisel has now produced three quality starts in his last four outings and has notched a team-high three complete games. Bovee and Kuisel are now the first-ever duo at Academy of Art to complete back-to-back complete game shutouts.
Â
Beyond the stellar pitching performance, the Urban Knights were able to record the win with timely hitting as well. After taking the lead with a run in the second, ART U struck once again the fourth. With two outs and junior shortstop
Payton Milone on second, senior right fielder
Cody Edmunds hit a shot up the middle that ricocheted off of the pitcher into center field. Running on contact, Milone scored with ease, giving Academy of Art a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Two innings later, ART U would add a third insurance run onto the board in a frame that saw seven Knights step up to the plate. This time, Milone came through on the offensive end: the shortstop laced a single a single into right field to drive in senior
Brett Adami who had tripled to lead off the inning. Adami had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 and was one of only two Urban Knights to record multiple hits in the contest. The other was Edmunds who turned in two hits and a run batted in.
Â
The win in game one tied the program record of 12 wins in a single season. Sitting at 12-28 with nine games to play, ART U hopes to set a new wins-record before the year comes to a close.
Â
Game Two: UH Hilo 7, ART U 4
Â
After being shutout for the series' first 19 innings, UH Hilo came through in the second inning of the double header's second contest. Phillip Steering hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall, recording the Vulcan's first four-bagger of the season. UH Hilo would, in fact, score in the next three consecutive innings, building a 7-4 lead, including the team's second homer of the day and season.

Â
The Urban Knights showed some life in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1 when sophomore designated hitter
Michael Maleski placed a single through the left side of the infield. With runners on second and third, junior catcher
Zack Trueblood was able to make the trip home safely. Academy of Art would score single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, but it did not prove to be enough as the Urban Knights fell 7-4.
Â
Both Maleski and senior center fielder
Joseph Marchini recorded multiple-hit games in game two. Maleski reached twice in three at-bats while recording a run batted in and Marchini found his way on base two times in four opportunities.
Â
The Urban Knights will return to Laney Field on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch, looking to take the series from the Vulcans.
