ALAMEDA, Calif. – Home runs, complete games, rain delays, and a 700 career wins record were just some of the happenings in Saturday's double header sweep over Holy Names.
Â
GAME ONE: ART U 9, HNU 5
Â
After a two hour and 29-minute rain delay, the game was finally underway. The Urban Knights were off to a fast start in the contest, scoring five runs before HNU was able to respond. Two runs scored in the second thanks to both junior shortstop
Payton Milone and senior right fielder
Cody Edmunds who each received a run batted in. In the following frame, ART U would tack on three more, this time courtesy of junior catcher
Zack Trueblood and and freshman designated hitter
Daniel Farfan.
Â
To this point, junior left hander Alex Kuisel was rolling, having put zeros on the board through three innings. However, HNU would put together a four-run bottom of the fourth to pull within one run.
Â
The score would remain the same through the fifth, but the Urban Knights put some distance between themselves and the Hawks in the sixth: senior third baseman Tyler Strawn and senior first baseman Brett Adami each collected runs batted in to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Â
Holy Names would pull within two runs in the eighth, but the Knights put them away for good with two more insurance runs in the ninth inning.
Â
Kuisel's win was a special one as it marked the team's 13th of the season and it broke the program's single season wins record. Altogether, the lefty allowed five runs (four earned), one walk, and one strikeout through 7.1 innings of work.
Â
On offense, the entire lineup contributed in one way or another as eight out of nine starters recorded at least one base hit. Strawn went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and a run batted in. Farfan also performed well in the DH spot, tallying two hits, a double, and two runs batted in.
Â
GAME TWO: ART U 5, HNU 3 (7IN)
Â
After a solid game one at the plate, Farfan took to the mound in the second contest, looking to sweep the double header and take a 2-1 series lead before returning home on Sunday.
Â
In the first, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead when Dentoni hit a two-run home run to right field. The dinger gave HNU their first lead of the day, but it would not be long before Academy of Art would respond.
Â
After a scoreless second frame for both sides, the Urban Knights got back to work in the third. The first run of the inning came on a well-executed double steal where senior center fielder Joseph Marchini took off from first, prompting the Hawk's catcher to throw to second. When the throw was released, junior left fielder Cameron Jones sprinted home and made it without a contest. Four pitches later, Marchini came in to score when a sharply hit ball was lined to the shortstop who could not handle the play. The contest was now tied at two runs apiece heading into the fourth.
Â
Both teams would trade scoreless fourth and fifth innings, but ART U would take the lead in the fifth. With runners on first and third and no outs, Adami hit into a double play, allowing Strawn to come in to score. With the bases empty, Farfan took matters into his own hands, sending the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for his first career home run.
Â
Academy of Art took a 5-2 lead into the 7th, but Holy Names would not go down without a fight. The Hawks plated a run after a leadoff double to bring the score within two runs. After a hit batter, Dentoni stepped up to the plate representing the winning run. Having already homered in the game, he looked to do the same to give HNU the victory. However, after a six-pitch battle, Farfan coaxed a popup for Trueblood to put away and record the victory.
Â
As the final out settled into Trueblood's glove, Farfan recorded his second complete game of the season, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits, three walks, and one strikeout. The freshman is now 2-0 with two complete games while pitching at College of Alameda. In his previous outing, Academy of Art hosted Hawaii Pacific and the righty collected his first career win in the form of a complete-game shutout.
Â
The win in game two represented yet another special moment: head coach Dan McDermott's 700th collegiate win at the helm. After 13 years of coaching at Regis University, nine years at Briar Cliff, and two at ART U, McDermott's record now stands at 700-551.
Â
Academy of Art will return to Laney College for the final game of the 2016 season on Sunday, looking to take the series from the Hawks. The game will also feature the Urban Knights' six seniors who will be playing their final game in an ART U uniform. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
