SAN DIEGO – Senior right-hander
Chris Petrosie was nearly untouchable in game two, retiring 16-consecutive Sea Lions at one-point, and pitched all the way into extra innings. However, Point Loma came away with their second extra-innings win of the series, two wins on the day, and ultimately, the series sweep.
Â
GAME ONE: PLNU 18, ART U 4
Â
PLNU broke out the bats once again in the series' third game in San Diego. The Sea Lions scored a season-high, 18 runs to route the Urban Knights 18-4.
Â
ART U did not go quietly however, as they collected eight hits in the affair. The biggest of the day came off the bat of senior outfielder
Izac Bauer who crushed a 3-run home run in the sixth inning. His second homer of the year made it an 11-4 game at that point. The Urban Knights produced six more base runners during the remainder of the contest, but it was not enough to overcome a PLNU offense which compiled six home runs and 18 total runs after scoring in each of the final seven innings.
Â
Bauer had the most productive outing for ART U, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, a home run, a double, and a run. Junior catcher
Zak May also collected a pair of hits in four at-bats and cashed in on one RBI. It was May's fourth multi-hit game of the season.
Â
GAME TWO (8 IN): PLNU 2, ART U 1
Â
As if all of Saturday's runs quota was met in game one, game two featured a low-scoring affair, showcasing gems from both teams' starting pitchers.
Â
Making his first start of the season, Petrosie (2-1) allowed two hits in the opening frame, including a solo home run to PLNU's Colby Kaneshiro. However, the Communications and Media Technologies major was nearly perfect afterwards: he did not allow a hit over the next six innings and retired a total of 16-consecutive batters.
Â
The Sea Lions' 1-0 lead taken in the first was short-lived as ART U responded in the top of the second. Bauer led off the inning with a single up the middle and later stole his second base of the year to move up to second. A groundout moved him over to third, but he ultimately came home on a single from senior infielder
Taylor Martin through the left side.
Â
It took all the way until extra innings of the 7-inning game for Point Loma to decide things: the Sea Lions opened the eighth inning with a leadoff triple and then, with one out, Adam Rios delivered an RBI single through the right side. His game-winning hit went right through a 5-man infield which the Urban Knights' had set up to lessen the likelihood of any hits through the infield.
Â
When it as all said and done, Petrosie was given the tough-luck loss despite 7.1 stellar innings of work on the mound. He allowed just two runs (both earned) on four hits, two strikeouts, and he did not allow a walk. Martin (1-for-3) drove in ART U's lone run of the contest, but senior infielder
Elijah Smith collected two hits in four at-bats.
Â
Academy of Art leaves San Diego with an 18-19 overall record and they are now 13-15 in the PacWest (sixth). The Urban Knights will now return home where they will prepare to host both Hawaiian schools over the next two weeks, starting with UH Hilo on April 21 at 6:00 p.m.
"In the world of process, we did well in that we were so close to winning two low scoring, extra-inning games and came back from an eight-run deficit to make game two 8-7," said head coach
Dan McDermott. "We told the boys we are not talking about moral victories. We are simply stressing the small things that turn those games into wins. Point Loma is an outstanding program and is among the elite on the West Coast. Their team is tailored to their field and it is a difficult place to play. During the next week, we will have several intense practice sessions as we prepare for our final twelve regular season games."
