Knights Sweep CWU to Remain Undefeated

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Academy of Art starts their season undefeated after winning both games of the doubleheader on Sunday against Central Washington to sweep the abbreviated series. The Urban Knights are now off to their best start in program history at 3-0.

Game One: ART U 6, CWU 5

Senior pitcher Ben Kaser was back on the mound for ART U and got off to a great start, retiring the first six batters he faced in order. Neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the fourth when the Urban Knights worked back to back walks before senior catcher Zak May singled to drive in two runs. May advanced to second on a wild pitch putting him in scoring position for sophomore outfielder Noah Daubin who doubled to right and gave ART U a 3-0 lead.

Kaser continued to deal and made it through five scoreless innings, but in the top half of the sixth the Wildcats struck for four runs on a handful of singles, an error, and a double. Junior pitcher Matthew Sanchez did well in relief, striking out the first batter he faced and leave two runners stranded. CWU added another run in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.

ART U retaliated in the bottom half of the inning, sparked by a senior first baseman Angel Mora base-hit. Daubin launched his second double of the day and senior outfielder Taj Dawson drew a walk to load the bags for junior utility Daniel Curiel who came up clutch with a bases clearing triple to give ART U a 6-5 lead.

Junior pitcher Galen Manhard came on in the ninth to ensure the lead would stay there, and threw a solid inning to earn his first save of the season. Sanchez picked up the win after throwing well for 2.1 innings with four strikeouts.

Game Two: ART U 2, CWU 1

In game two, Mora had an outstanding 2019 debut throwing six innings, giving up only one run on four hits, and collecting six strikeouts along the way. Senior pitcher Gonzo Rios came in for three innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts to earn the win.

At the plate junior shortstop Justin Summers stroked two doubles, while senior second baseman Elijah Smith collected a pair of hits including a double down the line for the first ART U RBI in the eighth.

Dawson secured the game winning RBI when he worked a bases loaded walk in the bottom on the ninth to walk off the Wildcats and seal the sweep. Earlier in the game he pounded a two-bagger to elevate his batting average to .444.

With the pair of wins, ART U remains undefeated in 2019 with a 3-0 record. The Urban Knights will take on Holy Names next, in a four game series starting Feb. 15.
