OAKLAND, Calif. –The Academy of Art baseball team put the first four runs of the game on the board in game two of a four-game series, but it was Holy Names that would walk away victorious by a final of 9-4.
As they did in all four games of their season-opening series last weekend, the Urban Knights (2-4) got the first runs of the game, plating one in the first and three in the second frames. Junior outfielder
Ty Conrad collected his first RBI in an ART U uniform with an RBI single that scored junior outfielder
Noah Daubin, followed by an RBI single from junior designated hitter
Cannon Secrist.
A throwing error and an RBI groundout would bring the other two runs in, with RBIs credited to junior outfielder
Dominic Chavarria and senior third baseman
Thomas Delgadillo, but those would be the final runs of the game for the Urban Knights. The Hawks (7-4) would first respond in the top of the third with a Dominic Masciel home run, a solo shot to left field.
Another big fly would come three innings later, as Joshua Nelson hit a two-run dinger to the cut the Hawks' deficit to 4-3. The seventh inning is when HNU would take the lead with a four-spot, beginning with an RBI double into left field from Morgan McIntosh. Nelson would get his third RBI of the day on a bases loaded single, and Robbie McIntosh would drove a 1-1 pitch into left field for the third run of the frame. A sacrifice fly from Jonathan Waite would score the final run of the inning, putting HNU up 7-4.
Two insurance runs would come across in the ninth inning, as Nelson continued his hot hitting with an RBI double into right center, followed by another Waite sacrifice fly that scored Nelson.
Earning the win was Ian Wadenius, tossing 2.2 innings and not allowing a hit while striking out two and walking one. Senior pitcher
Galen Manhard was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings pitched. Junior starting pitcher
Collin Carriger did not factor into the decision despite a quality start, allowing three runs to score on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
The series will conclude on Sunday with games three and four, with first pitch of the doubleheader beginning at noon from Laney College.
