San Francisco, Calif. (11/21/08) -- The Academy of Art University Men's Basketball team fell to a tough University of San Francisco Dons team (3-1) Friday night by a score of 23-74. The Urban Knights (0-2) fought hard but were unable to find the basket, ending the night with a low 18.4 percent from the field. Freshman small forward Hunter Hayden went 3-for-7 from the floor and led the team with four rebounds. Junior guard J.R. Cassita recorded the Knights' only 3-pointer in the last 1:37.
The Dons' Dior Lowhorn matched his season-high with 26 points in USF's home debut. Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held in memory of legendary former Dons coach Pete Newell, who died Monday at the age of 93. Newell coached San Francisco for four seasons beginning in 1946-47, winning an NIT championship in 1949. Newell also led University of California Berkeley to the NCAA title in 1959 and was coach of the U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal in Rome in 1960.
Despite the outcome, Friday night's game will go down in history as the first match-up between the Urban Knights and a Division I contender in the Academy of Art University's inaugural athletics season.
Next up for the Knights is a match-up between Master's College on Wednesday, November 26th, at UCSF.
