Lacey, WA-- Academy of Art University Women's Basketball battled a tough Saint Martin's University team Friday night. The Saints scored first and had control of the first half. Despite coming back strong in the second half, the Urban Knights were not able to outscore Saint Martin's. They ended up losing the game 71-57.
The Urban Knights had a slow start on the night, only making 10 out of 27 of their field goal attempts, and only two out of eight of their three point attempts. However, the Ladies were two for two on their free throws. Going into half time, AAU was down 46-24 to the Saints. But that would not keep the Urban Knights down.
The Academy of Art University came out strong in the second half. Both their offense and defense came alive and they were able to test their opponents. In the second half the Urban Knights made 11 out of 33 of their field goal attempts, and landed nine out of 14 free throws. With less than 9:25 to play in the game, the Urban Knights put together a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 14. But that was the closest AAU would come to the lead as the Saint's then rallied back for the win.
AAU's own Sondra Stilwell had 12 points on the game, Lorraine Etchell had 13 points, and leading the team on the night was Ali Tyson-Taufoou with 14 points. The Urban Knights had a total of 45 rebounds and shot 30 percent, while Saint Martin's shot 41.3 percent.
With the loss the Urban Knight's record falls to 2-15 on the season and Saint Martin's record climbs to 10-5 overall. AAU takes action again tomorrow, January 17th, against California State University East Bay in San Francisco. Tipoff is set to take place at 5:30 pm.
