Hilo, HI—Finishing a week long road trip in Hawaii, the Academy of Art University Women's Basketball team battled a tough University of Hawaii-Hilo Wednesday night. The Urban Knights were eager for a win and came out attacking. They scored first and held an early lead over the Vulcans. Despite valiant efforts from the offense in the second half of the game, the AAU Women could not keep their lead and ended up losing the game with a final score of 80-64.
After jumping out in front in the start of the game, the Academy of Art University's defense could not hold up against the strong Vulcan offense. They trailed 47-28 going into halftime. However, the Urban Knights did not let that keep them down and they came out strong after the half. Even though the Urban Knights were able to outscore their opponent 40-34 in the second half, they were not able to come back from the deficit from the first half.
With the strong offense the AAU women showed, they had four players who scored in double digits. The lead scorer for the Urban Knights was freshman point guard Lorraine Etchell. She posted 18 points for her team and went 8-of-8 from the line. Junior point guard Sondra Stilwell also stepped up for the Urban Knights putting up 17 points in the game. Also playing key roles in the scoring were AAU senior guard Ali Tyson-Taufoou who had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and senior forward Levalasi Key who managed 11 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
The Hawaii Hilo Vulcan also had four players who scored in double digits. Their lead scorer Sheila Azevedo posted 22 points for her team in throughout the game.
After the loss, the Urban Knights record falls to 5-17 overall, and Hawaii Hilo's record improves to 8-6 overall. The AAU Women return home to battle Seattle University on February 4th. Tip-off is set to take place at 5:00pm in San Francisco, CA.
