Game Notes
WEEKEND SERIES:
Academy of Art University baseball competed against SF State to lead off the season and now the two schools will meet just 10 days later. This time, it will be for a three-game series which begins with a single game on Friday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 PM. The teams will then conclude with a Saturday doubleheader which is set to commence at 11:00 AM. All games are scheduled to be played at the Gators' Maloney Field.
LOOKING AHEAD:
After playing SFSU this week, AAU Baseball heads to Hawaii for a six-game trip where it will face Hawaii Pacific University and University of Hawaii at Hilo spanning from Feb. 20 to Feb. 24. The Urban Knights will play a four-game series over the first three days against the HPU Sea Warriors and then finish with a doubleheader against the UHH Vulcans on Feb. 24. That trip will serve as the team's final stretch of games in February as Academy of Art University receives a week-long rest before its next contest in early March.
SCOUTING THE GATORS:
Since their 6-1 victory over AAU to begin their season, SF State went on to take three of four games against Oregon Tech in a two-day span. Offensively, the most consistent Gators have been infielder Sean Proni and first baseman Jeff McCall who boast batting averages of .550 and .533 respectively. Early in this season, they have already combined to record five extra-base hits and score seven runs. Each of SFSU's starting pitchers has had a game to show their stuff and it is right-hander Patrick Haugen, who threw against the Urban Knights, who leads the team with a 1.12 ERA and 10 strikeouts thus far. Not far behind Haugen are Eric Keithly and Jeff Henning who both sport a 1.50 ERA and have combined for 17 strikeouts over 12 innings.
LAST SERIES RECAP:
Since their series with No. 4 UC San Diego cancelled due to inclement weather this past weekend, the Urban Knights previous opponent was Fresno Pacific who defeated AAU in a pair of games on Feb. 4. In both contests, the Sunbirds had established a three-run lead by the end of the second inning and went on to defeat the Knights, 8-1 and 7-0, with strong starting pitching as well. Junior right fielder
Mike Gutierrez, who had his two-game hitting streak snapped in the second game, has been the most consistent Academy of Art University player this season with a .400 batting average and five total bases thus far.
