Belmont, Calif. (2/3/09)—The Urban Knights Men's Basketball Team fell to Notre Dame de Namur University 74-69 last night at NDNU's home court. Despite outstanding performances by several Urban Knights, a late second half comeback and a solid defensive showing by the Argos in overtime propelled NDNU to victory.
The game began with an early missed jumper by sophomore guard Phillip Samuel, which was soon followed by an early 18-8 scoring advantage by the Argos. NDNU's Bennie Murray scored eight straight points during the run to give the Argos a cushion. The Urban Knights, however, would not go away quietly, closing the half on a 10-2 run to take a one point lead into the break. Both teams shot an even 40% from the field in the first half.
The second half opened with an immediate lay-up by freshman forward Hunter Hayden, who ended the game with 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with three minutes left to play in overtime. AAU held the lead for most of the second half until NDNU's Andre Hayes hit eight straight points before Victor Lee scored five straight to push the Argos ahead by one with 5:16 remaining. Tensions were high as the Urban Knights regained the lead with 3:03 remaining in the second half. A jumper by freshman forward Lorenzo Dobson, who led the team with a remarkable 13 rebounds, put the Knights up 64-61 with 54 seconds left to play in regulation time. NDNU's Dan Bergeron then came up huge as he knocked down a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to tie the score at 64-64. The Urban Knights had an opportunity to seal the victory with four seconds remaining, but were unable to connect on two attempts by Samuel.
The Urban Knights found themselves thrust into overtime but unfortunately defeat was inevitable with AAU shooting 16.7% from the field and the Argos shooting 50%. The loss brings AAU's record to 3-20 overall.
Despite the loss, freshman point guard Marqus Crawford had a stellar night, finishing the game with 19 points, three assists and seven rebounds.
Next up for the Urban Knights is a road trip to Utah and Los Angeles where they will face Division I Utah Valley State College on February 5th and American Sports University on February 7th.
