ACADEMY OF ART SET FOR TWO-GAME WEEK

After a record-setting 44-point performance by freshman forward William Overton, Jr. in their 86-75 win over Menlo last Saturday, ART U men's basketball plays another home contest this week. The Urban Knights face Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday and then head out on the road against Western Washington this Sunday.

OPENING TIP
On Wednesday, Dec. 8, the Urban Knights and Otters take the court inside Kezar Pavilion. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM. The week ends with ART U in Bellingham, WA for a game against WWU on Sunday, Dec. 12 inside Sam Carver Gym at 1:00 PM. In addition to live stats, live score updates will also appear on the Academy of Art University Athletics Twitter.

KNIGHTS WATCH
Overton, Jr. was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his historic 44-point performance on Dec. 4. The freshman forward currently leads all PacWest scorers with an average of 21.6 points per game. After converting a school record 19 foul shots against Menlo, Overton, Jr. now sports the fifth best free throw percentage (.850) in the PacWest. Junior forward Keith Davis is also among the top five in scoring (15.6 ppg) for the conference. He earned his second PacWest Weekly Top 10 honor for a 16-point effort last week.

SCOUTING THE OTTERS
With CCAA play beginning one game into the 2010-11 year, Cal State Monterey Bay now sports a 3-2 overall record. The Otters opened the season with a 49-47 upset victory over Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, before taking a pair of losses. CSUMB dropped a narrow 78-75 final to SF State and fell 75-68 to Menlo College, whom ART U most recently defeated. Cal State Monterey Bay recently bested UCSD, and then used a 22-point performance (seven 3-pointers made) by guard Darroll Phillips to top Cal State East Bay. Guard Davion Berry paces the Otters with 15.0 points per game.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Since sustaining an 86-80 loss to the PacWest's Dixie State early in the season, Western Washington has won four straight. The Vikings started the stretch by defeating CSUEB, whom the Knights took to overtime in their season opener, and most recently topping Montana State Billings in GNAC play. In five games, four different WWU players have led the team in scoring as guard Shedrick Nelson now paces the Vikings with 15.0 points per game. With nearly one fourth of his points from the free throw line, forward Michael Duty is next in line with 14.3 ppg.

ART U TOPS MENLO, OVERTON SCORES RECORD 44 POINTS
The first Academy of Art men's basketball home game was a memorable one. The Knights dominated Menlo College in an 86-75 final that saw ART U never trail after a 9-0 run two minutes into the contest. Overton, Jr. played a key role in the burst and would go on to set a modern day PacWest Conference record with 44 points in total. Propelled by a highlight dunk from Overton, Jr. and two important layups by freshman guard Czar Robotham, the Urban Knights built a double-digit first half lead.

Though the Oaks fought back as the period concluded, Davis and Overton, Jr. helped push Academy of Art further ahead quickly in the second half. Up 60-40 with 7:53 remaining, ART U withstood another rally by Menlo and took the 86-75 victory to the delight of the home crowd.

LOOKING AHEAD

After this week's action, one final home game remains for Academy of Art men's basketball in 2010. The Urban Knights will face Bethany University of the NAIA California Pacific Conference on Dec. 18 at Kezar Pavilion. From there, ART U partakes in New Year's Tournament hosted by Holy Names University at the end of December.
