Belmont, CA– In their Homecoming rematch, the Academy of Art University (8-15, 4-8 PacWest) were unable to defeat Notre Dame de Namur University (14-11, 10-4 PacWest) on Monday evening. Four different Urban Knights finished with double digit points, but offensive success was not enough to overcome the Argonauts as AAU fell, 81-69.
Despite NDNU jumping out to an early lead, including an 11-2 run midway through the half, the Urban Knights were able to bring the game to within in seven at the end of the half. AAU hit 60 percent of their shots from the three point line as Junior Jasmine English added seven first half points and senior Sondra Stilwell dished out four assists.
The second half saw NDNU knocking down 40 percent of their shots and extending their lead to as many as 17 points, but AAU continued to fight back. A three point basket from sophomore Lorraine Etchell with just over four minutes remaining, brought the game to within nine. The Urban Knights fell short with the Argonauts out scoring them 42-37 in the second half.
Etchell finished the game with 11 points as she sank 5 of her 7 shots. English recorded a team high 14 points and pulled down six rebounds in the contest. Junior Verity Peets and senior Brittany Kikuchi added 13 and 11 points respectively. Kikuchi was impressive from the three point line hitting 3-of-4 shots.
On the defensive end, AAU was not able to shut down the duo of Katie and Laura Zasly. The twins combined for 49 points hitting 18-of-23 from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds.
In their next game, the Urban Knights will face Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on Thursday February 25th. The contest is set for 5 p.m. at Antelope Gymnasium.
