Box Score #2

St. George, UT --- In a Friday PacWest doubleheader at Bruce Hurst Field, AAU Baseball (2-22 overall, 2-12 in PacWest) was topped by Dixie State College (19-9 overall, 12-6 in PacWest) with final scores of 5-2 and 17-4. Freshman shortstop Stefen Henderson was 3-for-6 with one run batted in, one stolen base, and two runs scored in the two games. Senior right fielder Mike Gutierrez hit the first home run of his Academy of Art career in game two, going 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Freshman right-hander Drew Sullivan-Hames (1-6) allowed an RBI double in the opening inning of game one, but he followed that with two scoreless innings where he faced just seven batters. In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Storm used four consecutive hits to take a 4-0 lead only to watch AAU take two of those runs back an inning later.

The Urban Knights' offense came alive in the fifth when a two-out rally began with Henderson's double to left center. Sophomore centerfielder Johnathan Robbins brought his teammate home on a RBI single and later came around to score. Junior left fielder Ryan Worley singled after Robbins and both runners took extra bases after sophomore third baseman Kenny Rollins, Jr. reached on an error.

Taking a 4-2 score into the bottom of the fifth, Academy of Art allowed one more run though the Knights still stayed within striking distance. One final scoring opportunity came for AAU in the seventh when Henderson knocked his second double of the game down the left field line. He would then steal third base, but Dixie State got the final out and won 5-2.

Sullivan-Hames took the loss in game one after allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

DSC got off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two when centerfielder Brett Adams hit a three-run home run against sophomore righty Alex Rosenthal (1-6). The advantage was quickly erased in the second starting with a solo home run over the center field fence by Gutierrez. Robbins batted home another with runners on the corners and freshman first baseman Andy Caniezo, who had walked, then scored on a fielding error in center field.

Nine additional runs came for the Red Storm over the next two innings while AAU got one on a RBI double by Henderson in the third. Left-hander Zach Mexicano took Rosenthal's place in the third and pitched a solid scoreless inning of relief. Dixie State eventually got five more runs before the game was complete and managed to keep Academy of Art off the scoreboard en route to the 17-4 end result.

Leading the way for the Urban Knights was Henderson who finished the day 3-for-6 with one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Robbins scored one of AAU's six runs in the doubleheader, but drove in two with his 2-for-5 performance. Gutierrez wrapped up Friday 1-for-5 with his first home run since joining Academy of Art last year. The Knights

Dixie State had solid offensive performances from Adams and right fielder Aaron Friend. The pair went 5-for-11 with seven RBIs, two home runs, six runs scored, and two stolen bases. The winning pitcher in game one was Justin Prodan (4-3) who pitched a complete game with two runs allowed and 13 strikeouts. Game two's victory went to Troy Hunter (3-1) who allowed four runs and struck out four.

Academy of Art and Dixie State continue their four-game series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader at Bruce Hurst Field. The first pitch of game one is set for 12:00 PM MST (11:00 AM PST)
