TIPPING OFF
The Urban Knights met up with stiff competition at last week's Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational, dropping contests to San Francisco State and Chico State over the weekend. Academy of Art showed flashes of brilliance, but it wasn't enough to catch up to their CCAA foes.
HONORS FOR OVERTON
One of the bright spots in the weekend's tournament was the play of sophomore guard William Overton, Jr. Overton dropped 20 points against the Gators and 12 against the Wildcats, and lead the Urban Knights in scoring in both contests. He also brought down 11 rebounds and had four steals in the tournament, and was named to the Mac Martin All-Tournament Team for his efforts.
THIS IS NOT A CHARITY
Against SF State, the Urban Knights stayed out of foul trouble (13 fouls) while reaping the rewards of the aggressiveness of the Gators, going 28 of 34 and shooting 82.4% from the free-throw line. When the Knights keep their opponents off the line, it also allows them to establish a presence down low with Hunter Hayden, Mike Jorritsma, and Noah Kone-Nelson, who have consistently put up big block numbers and altered shots against the opposition.
CIRCLING THE WAGONS
The Knights will have to stop Cal State East Bay and their junior guard Mark Samuels, who put up 29 points last week against Dominican as the Pioneers cruised to a 88-68 victory. CSU East Bay caused 25 turnovers by the Penguins, and shot 50% from beyond the arc. Including Samuels, the Pioneers had four players score in double figures, with freshman Jacari Whitfield (17pts), senior Roshun Wynne (11pts), and Nick Marshall (10pts) all reaching that plateau.
TAKING ON THE TRITONS
Through three games this season, UCSD has already scored 248 points for an average of 82.7 points a game. The Tritons broke the century mark in their season opener, defeating Chestnut Hill 102-74, and defeated Dominican on Sunday 78-73 to win their second consecutive Disney Classic Championship. Senior center Christian Hatch is averaging 20 points a game so far, and is also second on the team in rebounds, averaging 7.3 rebounds.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Knights will head off to the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Holiday Classic in Phoenix to play Fort Lewis and Seattle Pacific next Friday and Saturday.
