Knights Fall In OT Barn-Burner to Otters

Box Score
San Francisco, CA -- While the Academy of Art University men's basketball team's home opener on Tuesday night was certainly not lacking for entertainment, the result was not ideal for the Urban Knights. It took an extra period as the Knights caught up down the stretch, but visiting Cal State Monterey Bay came into Kezar Pavilion and ended up on top in a 91-87 contest. Sophomore Alex Carmon set a career-high with 36 points in the loss for ART U.

The Urban Knights came hot out of the gate, much like their last game, leading 13-10 at the first media timeout and 20-13 at the second after a three-pointer for Alexis Moore. But in that first ten minutes of the game, the Knights also got into foul trouble with 10 fouls putting CSUMB in the bonus for the rest of the half and keeping some of their hottest scorers off the floor.

ART U stretched the lead as far as 14 when Moore sunk another jumper that made it 27-13, but the Otters would go on a 7-0 run to cut the difference back to single digits, and would continue to chip away using the free-throw line to even the score. After leading for almost the entire half, Academy of Art saw the Otters take the lead with 1:51 left in the half on a layup by Ryan Nitz that capped off a 10-0 run by CSUMB. But, thanks in part to Alex Carmon scoring 11 of the final 12 points for the Knights in the first half, they went into the locker rooms up a bucket at 41-39.

Out of the break, the game went back and forth for the majority of the second half. The Urban Knights pushed the lead to five on a free throw by freshman Herman Pratt IV, but that led to an 11-point swing by the Otters to take a 56-50 lead. CSUMB got as far in front as 61-52 on a free throw from Ryan Nitz, and then it was ART U's turn to come back. Carmon converted a 3-point play and then backed that up with a three-pointer. Moore followed with a pair od free throws, and then Pratt had a layup that made it 66-64 with 8:03 remaining.

Cal State Monterey Bay again made it a nine-point game, however, capitalizing on the Knights' foul trouble as Alex Fertig's free throws sent Aaron Aikman to the bench with over five minutes reamining. ART U took another big blow when Moore fouled out with the Knights down 77-73 and 2:16 to go, but his former high school backcourt mate picked up the slack. Alex Carmon nailed a three at 1:29 to make it 77-76, and that set up a layup from Aaron Anderson with 1:04 left in regulation to tie the game at 78-78. The Knights would have one more chance to win before the buzzer after a clutch rebound from junior transfer Matt Cesca, but Carmon's attempt with the clock winding down ticked off front iron and the game went to overtime.
