Monmouth, OR – It was another hard fought battle Saturday afternoon, but ART U Women's Basketball stayed a perfect 2-0 with a 64-50 win over Western Oregon inside the Wolves' own New PE Building. Game two for Academy of Art in the WOU/Double Tree by Hilton D2 Shootout was close throughout the first half and tied midway through the second before a 12-0 run by the Urban Knights led them to victory.
Molly O'Brien was major in that stretch and ended with a game-high 18 points.
Playing to their home crowd, the Wolves came out strong and assumed an 8-2 lead thanks entirely to Chantel Divilbiss' offensive burst. She would go on to score the first 11 points for WOU, but ART U began to respond with
Sha'Nice Storey's jumper and soon four quick points by
Jasmin Guinn.
The Knights tied the game 13-13 when Storey found
Aleigh Krug for a layup inside and the momentum shifted as Academy of Art scored 11 unanswered points capped off by another basket by Krug. Now up 18-13, the margin remained in that vicinity until a 9-2 push back by Western Oregon allowed them to take a 30-27 lead and shortly thereafter sent the Wolves into the halftime locker room up 32-29 despite late free throws by O'Brien.
Though WOU went up by five with a basket early in the second half, the game was soon tied 36-36 on Guinn's free throw. A 6-0 push in which Storey, Guinn, and Krug all had contributions bumped ART U in front by four, but again Western Oregon answered the call with a 3-pointer from Divilbiss.
That's when things shifted and momentum swung to the visitors. A 44-44 tie game soon became 49-44 in favor of Academy of Art as
Zoie Sheng buried a triple of her own and
Alisa Griggs tossed in two free throws. With a little more than 7:30 left, the Knights simply exploded offensively. Sheng found Storey for two and then O'Brien had three consecutive layups before Griggs' jumper and free throws by Storey finished off the 12-0 attack. With two minutes left and ART U up 61-46, the contest had been sealed and Academy of Art would go on to win 64-50 in the end.
O'Brien finished with a game-high 18 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 at the foul line. She was supported by Storey's 13 points and three assists while Guinn was an absolute beast on the boards with 13 rebounds (six offensive) and 12 points. ART U used its classic tough defense resulting in a 23-9 points off turnovers advantage.
For Western Oregon, now 0-2 in 2013-14, the leading scorer was Divilbiss with 17 points while Dana Goularte added eight points and nine rebounds. No other WOU player scored more than seven points and the team collectively shot 28.6 percent from the field.
ART U will have its first home action of the season next week (Nov. 16-17) when the Urban Knights host the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at Kezar Pavilion.
