LEADING OFF
Closing up the loose end created by the state-wide rain two weeks ago, the Academy of Art University went back down to Azusa Pacific University on Tuesday to finish up a four-game series with the Cougars. But while the last series was marked by offensive outbursts by APU, the Urban Knights battled in both contests in a pair of well-pitched games by both sides, eventually falling 5-1 in the opener and 2-1 in the series finale. Now they'll face the two teams from Hawaii on their home turf after traveling to the islands last year.

HALF AND HALF HILO
The Vulcans come to the mainland with a 6-6 record so far in Pacific West Conference play, having most recently split a four-game series with California Baptist on March 14-15 back in Hilo. After then splitting a twinbill at Sonoma State, UH Hilo is led by senior Kyle Watase and junior Jordan Murai, who are both hitting .327 on the year. Watase is more of the power hitter, with two doubles and a homer, while Murai has four steals already on the year, second on the team. Jeremy Dela Cruz has three of the Vulcans eight wins, tossing 23.0 innings with an ERA of 3.13.

CAVESTANY CATCHING FIRE
Starting 13 of the Knights 20 games this year, newcomer Chucky Cavestany has lit up opposing pitching, hitting at a .422 clip and also slugging .511 on the season, knocking four doubles, tied for second on the team. His 19 hits rank fourth on the team, but he has done so in fewer at-bats than ever other player on the Urban Knights roster. The catcher was originally recruited back in head coach Brian Guinn's first year of coaching in 2010, but after bouncing around to a couple local junior colleges, he has finally come back to Academy of Art and has helped on both sides of the ball.

HPU RIDING HIGH IN PACWEST
Hawaii Pacific split a series with California Baptist and then took three of four from Point Loma Nazarene University in Hawaii before heading stateside for a 12-game road trip. They'll come to San Francisco after taking on Dixie State, and are led by a pair of players hitting over .400, as Codey Ellenwood is hitting .426 and reigning PacWest Player of the Week Kevin Lenik is up to .407 with four homers and seven doubles. Lenik batted .520 (13-25) with six extra-base hits, including three home runs, seven runs scored and 11 RBI in eight games for the Sea Warriors. On the mound, reliever Bryson Gauthe has thrown 20.2 innings and only allowed four earned runs, for an ERA of 0.87, while starter Joshua Garcia has thrown a team-high 34.2 innings over five starts and put up a 2.34 ERA.

WHAT'S ON DECK
The Knights will have a brief respite from PacWest play, traveling to Turlock to take on CCAA opponent Cal State Stanislaus. Their next home games will be in April against Holy Names and Fresno Pacific before finishing the season on the road.
