SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art men's soccer (2-12-1, 2-8-0, PacWest) and Notre Dame de Namur (8-7, 6-4 PacWest) locked their horns in a defensive battle on Thursday that kept things scoreless until the 84th-minute. Despite taking a 1-0 lead, the Urban Knights saw the Argonauts tie the match with 53 seconds remaining and then pull away 2-1 in the first overtime with a golden goal.
Â
In the first half, ART U led both sides in the offensive category. Academy of Art saw three players contribute shots, including sophomore defender
Bobby Gutierrez who led the team with two. The Urban Knights' defense kept NDNU on their heels for the majority of the period, only allowing one shot to get through in the 18th-minute.
Â
It was in the second half that the offense began to come alive for both teams. Both the Knights and Argos came up with seven shots, but the game remained knotted 0-0 until just six minutes remained. Gutierrez played the ball off of an NDNU defender 10 yards out and crossed up the goalkeeper, scoring in the left corner of the net to give ART U a 1-0 lead. Academy of Art immediately went into a defensive mode, looking to maintain their lead for the remaining minutes. However, the Argonauts' Oscar Ledesma was able to find an equalizer from 25 yards out, placing a perfect shot just over the outstretched hands of freshman keeper
Jakob Primbas. Primabs had entered the game in the second half, and until that point had done well to allow nothing through, racking up four saves in the period.
Â
Notre Dame de Namur's goal forced the match into overtime which lasted just under four minutes. The Argos' Sergio Rico gave his team the win after being served the ball just in front of Primbas. The freshman dove to save both the shot and the game, but the attempt ricocheted off of his gloves and into the back of the net.
Â
The Urban Knights had six individuals record a shot in the contest, including Guttierez (4), freshman forward
Andrew Deans (3), and four others with one apiece.
Â
Academy of Art will now look to their final home game of the season when they welcome in the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific. The matchup will be the last at home for four Urban Knights as senior day will celebrate the careers of
Jake Walter,
Justin Erhunmwunsee,
Mathayo Huma, and
Ricardo "Ricky" Mendoza.
