Men's Soccer Drops Senior Day Match to Point Loma

SAN FRANCISCO – After years of hard work and sacrifice for the team, Academy of Art men's soccer's five seniors were thrown a final "hurrah" on senior day, their second-to-last match of the season. After a pregame ceremony where each member of the graduating class was recognized, all five seniors took the field to begin the match.

In the first half, ART U's defense shined through, stopping each of the Sea Lions' shots on-goal. However, despite their rigidity on the back line, the Urban Knights' own goal in the seventh-minute put them in an immediate uphill-battle. Both sides looked even throughout the opening 45 minutes however, as only four shots separated the two at the halfway-mark.

Point Loma opened up the second period with six shots in the in first 20 minutes, but Academy of Art continued to deny their attempts. It was not until the 66th-minute when the Sea Lions managed to score their second goal: alone in front of the net, PLNU's Mitch Wheelon took an initial shot which was saved by freshman goalkeeper Kris Jensson. However, the ricochet landed right at Wheelon's feet, allowing him to score just out of Jensson's outstretched hands. The score sparked a sense of urgency into the Urban Knights as they fired off three more shots in the period (two on-goal).

One of ART U's best opportunities to respond came in the 81st-minute when senior midfielder Jonny Navarro sent in a corner kick which was perfectly placed for a header shot from freshman defender Oliver Hadeen. However, his shot was blocked by a Point Loma Defender and his attempt ricocheted out of bounds. Navarro set up for the subsequent corner kick, but this time, the Sea Lions managed to clear the ball away. Senior forward Alex Walsh took one last attempt with two seconds remaining, but his shot sailed wide along with the Urban Knights' chances to complete a comeback.

Despite dropping the match 2-0, Jensson continued to impress during his freshman campaign, posting six saves, including four in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Isiah Quiros was ART U's biggest offensive-contributor with two shots including one on-goal.

With the loss, Academy of Art falls to 4-12-1 overall and 3-9 in PacWest-play. The Urban Knights will conclude their season with a 2:30 p.m. match on Sunday, November 5 against Concordia, a rescheduled match for an earlier cancellation due to the North Bay fires.
