Kiser's First Goal Lifts ART U Over WJU

SAN FRANCISCO – On Saturday afternoon, Academy of Art lined up across from William Jessup in a match which showcased the Urban Knights' prowess on both sides of the ball. With an impressive defensive-showing, which only conceded one Warriors shot in the opening period, ART U held on for the 1-0 victory after a second-half goal.

William Jessup received the first shot of the match, just 90 seconds into the first half, which was met with a diving save from freshman goalkeeper Kris Jensson. However, that was all the Urban Knights would allow for the remainder of the period. From that point on, ART U outshot the Warriors 7-0 while dominating the majority of the possession. Junior midfielder Bobby Gutierrez was an offensive workhorse in the first set of 45 minutes, taking three shots as well as all of the team's corner kicks.

16117In fact, it was Gutierrez's corner kick-assist in the second half which set up the Knights' winning goal: after returning from the half with the score still knotted at 0-0, sophomore forward Zak Kiser set up in the center of the box to receive a corner kick in the 47th-minute. After Gutierrez sent in the ball, Kiser found it in the air, placing a backwards header into the far post. Not only was it the team's first goal of the match, but it was also the first of the Waxahachie, Texas native's career. Now with a 1-0 lead, the Urban Knights' defense buckled down and remained impenetrable for the remainder of the contest. The Warriors went on to take seven shots in the second half, including four on-goal. However, their efforts went unrewarded as ART U held on for the 1-0 win.

Altogether, Academy of Art outshot William Jessup 15-8, registering their highest shot-total of the season. Gutierrez finished the match with five shots of his own, while sophomore midfielder Isiah Quiros collected a total of three (one on-goal). Jensson registered four saves on the day and now leads the PacWest with 11 overall this season. Kiser's goal tied him with Quiros for the team-lead with two points while Gutierrez and freshman midfielder Jaret Gil each have one point with an assist each.

Now 1-2-1, the Urban Knights will rest until September 21 when they begin PacWest-play at Notre Dame de Namur. Thursday's match will kick off at 3:00 p.m.
