ART U Closes Historic Season on Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO -- In the final game of 2018, Academy of Art women's soccer celebrated their six seniors: Silvia Fernstrom, Alice Michell, Dani Tellez, Chayney Mata, Morgan Wirz, and Rocky Herrera, for the time and commitment they dedicated to the program in a ceremony before the game. The seniors walked out with their friends and families while their successes were recited to the crowd of fans.

In an emotional moment immediately after the whistle, Tellez, who is dealing with an injury that has plagued her all season, kicked off for the Urban Knights by completing a full round of passes to each ART U player that was gathered around the middle circle. In a display of sportsmanship, NDNU played the ball out of bounds allowing ART U to substitute. The players hugged, there was crying in soccer, and Tellez was subbed out to complete her college career.

Play was underway and it did not take long for the Argonauts to take the lead. Zinet Sidiqqi took a free kick from near half field that ended in the back of the net. NDNU added another goal eight minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.

Academy of Art struck right back on freshman forward Baylie Christensen's first goal of the year. Michell took a shot that was deflected directly to the feet of Christensen who lobbed a ball over the Argonaut's keeper to keep it close at 2-1. With the assist, Michell's nine points becomes the second highest for the Urban Knights.

The Argos came on strong in the second half and netted three more goals by the end of the game to take the match 5-1.

Although they dropped the final match, Academy of Art women's soccer ends the season as the most successful team in program history with a record of 8-8-2.
