SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art University women's basketball hung tough against No. 24 Hawaii Pacific in front of its largest crowd of the year, but a stretch of four made 3-pointers as part of a 14-0 Sharks run in the third quarter permanently shifted the momentum toward an 87-58 victory for the winningest team in the Pacific West Conference.
Making two of their first three shots, ART U went up 7-2 to start, however, a 10-2 response from HPU essentially evened the score. Redshirt senior forward
Pre'Franz Dominick later converted a layup and, by the end of the opening quarter, just two points separated the teams 13-11.
Hawaii Pacific's dangerous long-range shooting reared its head midway through the second when Janessa Manzano connected on back-to-back triples during an 8-0 surge to establish a double-digit lead. Five 3-pointers fell for the Sharks in that quarter including one in the final minute to make the halftime score 40-24 in favor of the visitors.
Though senior forward
Helena Orts drained a triple of her own to start the third quarter and sophomore forward
Ines Medina later added another to keep the Urban Knights close, a barrage of 3-pointers later ensued as HPU pulled away. Up 61-32 at that point, Hawaii Pacific sunk its sixth and seventh triples of the quarter in the final two minutes and 10 seconds, pushing their lead beyond 30 points. Academy of Art would not come much closer in the fourth and the scoreboard read 87-58 Sharks when the final buzzer sounded.
Now 6-19 overall and 5-12, the Urban Knights got a team-high 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks from Dominick despite the loss. Orts contributed 16 points and six rebounds, Medina had 12 points and six rebounds, and redshirt senior guard
Jazzlynn Brewster finished with seven points plus seven assists and four steals.
The win, Hawaii Pacific's 17th in a row, furthers the Sharks' hold on the top place in the PacWest standings with a 15-1 record. Overall, HPU is 21-2 and continues to win with points from a variety of places. Monday night it was seven 3-pointers and 21 points off the bench for Manzano to lead five Sharks who scored in double figures and added to the team's 15 total 3-pointers made.
Academy of Art will play its final road game of the season this Saturday, Feb. 17 with a trip to Belmont and Notre Dame de Namur's Walter Gleason Gym next up. Tip-off for that PacWest rematch is set for 1 p.m.
