SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art and first place Point Loma squared off in Saturday's PacWest matchup at CCSF Soccer Field. The Urban Knights defended well throughout, but a pair of goals in each period forced ART U to drop the match 2-0.
Point Loma struck first in the 12th minute when good ball movement led to Abbey Teagle finding the back of the net for the second time this season. ART U saw their first opportunity in the 32nd minute on a shot from junior forward
Jenny Wittor who struck a ball well, but straight into the hands of the Sea Lions goalkeeper. Academy of Art buckled down and played strong defense to hold Point Loma scoreless the remainder of the period and went into the breather down 1-0.
The second Sea Lions goal came in the 56th minute on a corner kick. The crossed in ball was initially headed by London Gailey and made its way towards Madelon Denbaugh who quickly tapped the ball to the back left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Academy of Art defended against a flurry of shots after the goal, but five saves by senior goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz coupled with tenacious defensive play by sophomore defender
Alyssa Rasmussen and the rest of the back line held the Sea Lions scoreless the rest of the game.
ART U's best attempt came on a free kick in the 84th minute by senior midfielder
Rocky Herrera who quickly placed the ball to catch the Sea Lions off-guard and ripped a shot inches high of the top right corner of the net.
After the loss the Urban Knight's record drops to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in PacWest. ART U looks ahead to Thursday Oct. 4th, when they will host UH Hilo at 1 p.m. Â
