Late Run Leads No. 10 Point Loma to Victory Over ART U

SAN DIEGO -- No. 10 ranked Point Loma kept their conference record perfect with a solid second half shooting performance against ART U on Saturday in San Diego. The PacWest conference leading scorer Daulton Hommes poured in 33 points and despite keeping it close for much of the game and committing their fewest turnovers of the season the Urban Knights fell 85-66.

Senior center Cameron Niven opened the game with a layup off a defensive rebound from junior forward Victor Ruiz de Carranza. The big man from the East Bay had a solid performance against the Sea Lions finishing with 12 points, two rebounds, and a steal.

On the defensive side of the ball Carranza collected a team leading seven rebounds, and a steal, while scoring four points.

The Sea Lions took a sizable lead at 20-10 after an ART U foul sent them to the line. The Urban Knights battled back, and gained some traction when junior forward Andrija Blatancic hit a jumper with 9:32 left in the half.

Blatancic was once again the Urban Knights' leading scorer, collecting 15 points and six rebounds against Point Loma.

The battle continued, and finally ART U was within striking distance when junior forward Lake Del Mar hit a jumper from mid-range. Del Mar continued to be a key player off the bench for the Knights, contributing eight points and two rebounds against the Sea Lions.

ART U was down 41-34 with just nine-seconds to go when senior guard Cobe Williams nailed a half court shot at the buzzer to bring the Urban Knights within four at the half. The Pismo Beach native played a key role in ART U's offense, leading the team in assists with six while also putting up 14 points.

The second half started much like the first with ART U threatening to overtake the lead form the Sea Lions. Niven brought the Knights within two of the Sea Lions, but Point Loma continued to answer each ART U basket.

The Knights looked poised for a comeback when Blatancic narrowed the lead to 48-46 after finishing a layup, and free throw, to complete the three point play with 16:17 left.

After coming within two points of Point Loma for the third time in four minutes, the Knights failed to take control of the lead. The Sea Lions pulled away drastically and took a 71-58 lead with just under seven minutes left to play. The hard fought battle against the first place undefeated Sea Lions came to end, with ART U falling 85-66.

With the loss, Academy of Art moves to 6-12 overall and 6-7 in conference. ART U will have one more game on the road at Fresno Pacific on Jan. 30 before returning home to face Dominican on Feb. 1.
