SAN FRANCISCO -- A game-high of 24 points from junior guard
Stefan Milivojevic couldn't help Academy of Art men's basketball overcome the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, as the Urban Knights dropped Tuesday's non-conference matchup by a final score of 85-71 inside Kezar Pavilion.
"Tonight we can take a lot of lessons from this game in terms of how we want to play" said head coach
Scott Waterman. "Our turnovers still hurt us, but we learned a valuable lesson about playing together, sharing the ball, and that's something that's going to be very beneficial as we head into PacWest play."
After falling behind by six just four minutes into the game, the Urban Knights took the lead 12-11 on a jumper by redshirt junior guard
Dante Williams. The Coyotes) would pull back ahead by eight at the 9:02 mark, but ART U cut the lead to two on after back-to-back Milivojevic 3-pointers, two of his four in the game. That would be the closest the Urban Knights would come to the lead again, as Cal State San Bernardino would take their first double-digit lead of the game with four minutes left in the first half, and would cruise into halftime up by 17.
Despite falling behind by as many as 28 points midway through the second half, the Urban Knights didn't quit, as junior forward
Josh Hill had 10 of his 13 points in the second half, and Milivojevic added 11 more. Despite their best efforts, the Coyotes still came out on top 85-71.
The loss brings ART U's record to 2-6, while Cal State San Bernardino moves the other way to 6-2.
ART U finished the night shooting 46 percent from the floor, going 13-for-26 from the field in the second half to boost their percentage. The third Urban Knight in double figures was junior guard
Kai Tease who finished with 12 points, seven of which came in the final half. Milivojevic did his damage on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line.
"From a team perspective, we took another step in coming together, and that will be beneficial for building the culture that we want in this program," said Waterman.
Five Coyotes ended the game with double-digit points, led by Jordan Mitchell with 20, while Daytone Jennings was two rebounds away from a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Urban Knights will have a chance to rebound and get their first PacWest Conference win when they host the Silverswords of Chaminade this Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m. from historic Kezar Pavilion.
