SEATTLE – Outplaying Seattle Pacific in the second quarter, Academy of Art women's basketball fought back against a first quarter deficit, but the Falcons ended up walking away 76-50 winners inside Brougham Pavilion on Thursday afternoon.
After starting the game on an 11-0 run, the Falcons had built a 27-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. ART U, however, responded by opening the second with a 6-0 burst that featured two layups from freshman forward
Aari'yanna Sanders. The teams traded baskets thereafter, but a three-point play by graduate student guard
Tayler Bennett and a 3-pointer from senior guard/forward
Ines Medina helped cut the margin down to 39-26 at halftime.
Benett struck for a pair of buckets early in the third, but Seattle Pacific managed to extend its lead further with a 16-1 push thereafter. Offense came primarily from the tandem of Bennett and junior guard
Pam Wilmore in the fourth, but the point differential remained too great down the stretch and SPU claimed a 76-50 victory at the final buzzer.
Academy of Art moves to 2-4 overall on the year despite double-figure point totals for both Wilmore (16 points) and Bennett (13 points). Wilmore added four steals, three assists, and three rebounds.
Now 2-8 overall, Seattle Pacific was led by Hailee Bennett's 15 points plus 12 points and six rebounds from Grace Sterk.
Now finished with non-conference action for 2019-20, ART U resumes PacWest play this Saturday, Dec. 21 when the Urban Knights host Notre Dame de Namur at 1 p.m.
