Hawaii Roadtrip Ends With Chaminade Topping ART U

HONOLULU – Fighting back to cut a 17-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter, Academy of Art women's basketball challenged Chaminade in the finale of the Urban Knights' three-game set in Hawaii. Sophomore forward Lily Perkins poured in 24 points despite ART U's 68-57 loss to the Silverswords on Tuesday night inside McCabe Gymnasium.

Perkins started things out with a basket on Academy of Art's first possession and soon added free throws to help her team go up 6-2 out of the gate. A 3-pointer coupled with a jumper from junior forward Ines Medina put ART U ahead 11-5, but the lead would shift on 14-1 Chaminade run to end the quarter.

The second frame began with the teams combining for just one basket in the first four minutes and soon the Silverswords had pushed a 31-14 margin. However, the Knights rallied back before halftime as a block from senior guard Inga Kot would set up Medina for the fast break and a buzzer-beater by freshman guard Chanel Stuart sent Academy of Art into the break trailing 31-21.

19292The third quarter performance by ART U put the Knights in position for a comeback. Perkins came out of halftime by keying a 6-0 run and she later scored a jumper in the paint to cut the deficit down to four at 35-31. Her eighth and ninth points of the quarter came at the foul line with 11 seconds left and Academy of Art found itself down 44-36 moving to the fourth.

Those free throws gave way to what became an 8-0 run as ART U was behind only by two points at 44-42 with nearly eight minutes left. Chaminade had an 8-0 push of its own midway through the final frame and free throws as well as timely baskets allowed the Silverswords to fend off an Urban Knights comeback, ultimately standing victorious 68-57.

ART U's overall record moves to 3-18 while its conference record is now 2-16. Perkins' 24 points (which included 12 free throws made for the second-highest single-game mark in program history) marked the fourth consecutive game that she has scored 21 or more and she added six rebounds plus three assists. Medina's highest scoring output since Dec. 1 saw her go for 17 points with seven rebounds while Stuart finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Chaminade rises to 5-15 overall and 4-12 in PacWest play with the win. A game-high 25 points from Destiny Castro made her the third Silversword ever to score 1,000 career points and she would also contribute eight rebounds as well as three assists.

With its Hawaii roadtrip complete, Academy of Art will return to the Bay Area for its final two home games over this next week. First up, Holy Names comes to Kezar Pavilion for a 1 p.m. tip-off this Sunday, Feb. 17. That will be followed by "Senior Night" on Thursday, Feb. 21 versus Notre Dame de Namur at 5 p.m.
