Northwest Nazarene Defeats Knights in Late Innings

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The streak is snapped at seven. Academy of Art experienced their first losses of the season Friday afternoon at Laney College to Northwest Nazarene. The Urban Knights were tied late in both games and pushed the second game into extra innings. ART U had the winning run 90 feet away and almost walked off for the second time this season, but the Nighthawks prevailed and won both games of the doubleheader.

Game 1: NNU 12, ART U 4
Senior pitcher Ben Kaser took the mound for the Urban Knights and started with three straight scoreless innings. In the bottom half of the third junior third baseman Fabian Barcena claimed the first ART U hit. Two batters later junior outfielder Daniel Curiel drove in Barcena with a double down the left field line to give ART U a 1-0 lead.

The Nighthawks had back to back single run innings in the fourth and fifth, but the Urban Knights came back in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim a 3-2 lead. The pair of runs came on a senior second baseman Elijah Smith double down the left field line. Smith is up to nine runs batted in on the year, second most on the team. NNU tied the game in the sixth and scored three in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. The Knights scored one more run on a junior outfielder Thomas Delgadillo single, but the game got away from them after that and NNU took game one.

Offensive leaders from game one include senior first baseman Angel Mora with two doubles, Curiel with a pair of hits and a run, and junior shortstop Justin Summers with two runs.

Game 2: NNU 6, ART U 3
The Nighthawks struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the first. After the early runs junior pitcher Matthew Sanchez got back on track and threw three scoreless innings before giving up one last run in the fifth. ART U tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore utility Noah Daubin doubled down the right field line to score Mora and sophomore catcher Ryan Gamboa. The next hitter, Barcena, traded places with Daubin with a double of his own.

With the game tied at three, senior pitcher Gonzo Rios came on in the sixth and completely shut down the Nighthawks for four innings. Rios threw four scoreless frames with four strikeouts and three hits to position ART U for a walkoff win. Junior outfielder Alex Golembiewski came up with one out in ninth and hit a clutch single to left center. After a senior catcher Zak May walk and a fielder's choice, the Urban Knights had runners on second and third with two outs, but NNU worked out of the jam and stranded the runners. The Nighthawks scored three runs in the top of the 10th and went on to win game two 6-3.

After the pair of losses, Academy of Art is still a tremendous 7-2 overall. The Urban Knights will look to bounce back tomorrow with another doubleheader against NNU with games starting at noon.
