LA MIRADA, Calif. – Academy of Art women's basketball guard
Chanel Stuart added one more milestone to her first-year resume Saturday evening, scoring a career-high 30 points in a 73-65 loss to Biola in Southern California.
Faced with a 20-8 deficit by the end of the first quarter, the Urban Knights fought back with a huge offensive push in the second quarter. ART U converted five of its first six shot attempts and it was Stuart who nailed a pair of 3-pointer midway through the frame, cutting the BU lead down to a single point at 24-23.
Those baskets by Stuart started a 14-0 run that also included three points from sophomore forward
Megan Jefferson, two from sophomore forward
Lily Perkins, and, when halftime arrived, it brought a 32-26 advantage for Academy of Art.
Though Stuart continued to hold the hot hand with a layup to start the third quarter, Biola began to chip away at the margin, retaking the lead after a 10-0 response. The game see-sawed back and forth as junior forward
Ines Medina contributed a three-point play before the Eagles closed the quarter with another 10-0 push to head into the fourth up 48-40.
Back-to-back triples from Stuart and Perkins opened the final quarter and, despite looking at a double-digit difference with under four minutes to play, ART U used the foul line heavily during an 11-2 comeback that made it a 65-63 deficit with a minute and a half left in regulation. Free throw conversions of their own, however, ultimately spelled the difference as the Eagles went on to prevail 73-65.
Though not able to qualify for the PacWest Tournament until next season, Biola finishes this season tied with Concordia's 9-13 conference record and an 11-17 overall record. Both Eagles teams would have been needed a PacWest commissioner coin-flip to determine who would earn the last spot in the postseason tournament. On this night, it was Jessica Shill who led BU with 17 points.
Academy of Art completes its 2018-19 campaign with a 4-21 overall record and a 3-19 record in PacWest play. Stuart became the ninth Urban Knight ever to score 30 or more points and joined a group of just five others to make six or more 3-pointers in a single game. After starting an impressive 6-for-7 shooting from the field in the first half, she ended 11-for-19 from the field with two steals and three rebounds as well. Perkins contributed 18 points including a 9-of-10 performance at the foul line with five assists and four steals.
