KEIZER, Ore. -- The Urban Knights continued to shine offensively in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Corban at Volcanoes Diamond. The 20 run, 25 hit day, featured a couple of milestones in ART U baseball program history. Junior outfielder
Thomas Delgadillo broke the longest hit-streak record after hitting safely in 14 straight while senior infielder
Elijah Smith tied the career triples record with his 10th and broke the single season doubles record with his 17th. On the defensive side, senior pitcher
Gonzo Rios collected his second win of the series and sixth of the season to tie the single-season wins record.
"Good end to the series," said head coach
Dan McDermott. "Bear Smith was incredible today at the plate, besides one strikeout he hit everything hard all day. He took the pressure off the guys and really gave them a chance to come alive."
Game One: ART U 13, CU 6
The Urban Knights got on the scoreboard early, in the top of first, when Delgadillo scored on a throwing error by Corban's catcher. Delgadillo's lead off hit marked 14 games in a row with a hit to break James Singzon's record set in 2011. In the bottom half of the inning, the Warriors brought in one on a bases loaded walk.
After a scoreless second inning, CU took a two-run lead in the bottom of the third, but the Knights had a huge fourth, adding five runs. Smith led off with a double to right field and was sent home by senior catcher
Zak May, who hit a single down the left field line, before senior first baseman
Angel Mora scored May on a double to right field. A pitching change for the Warriors could not stop the offensive momentum of the Knights, who collected two more hits in a row. All said and done ART U had six straight hits to start the inning and ended with a 6-3 lead.
The battle continued as CU added a run in the bottom of the fourth and ART U one in the fifth. The Urban Knights went scoreless in the next two inning, while Corban made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up at seven.
"Gonzo appeared in three games getting two wins and a hold," said McDermott. "His performance in game one today was so significant, as he came in with the winning run on base and put out their rally, giving us a chance to put the game away in extra innings."
And put it away they did. The Urban Knights exploded for six runs capped off by Smith's second double and May's second run batted in for a 13-7 extra inning ART U victory.
Game Two: ART U 7, CU 6
ART U was first on board once again, with runs from junior shortstop
Justin Summers and Smith to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead. ART U further extended their lead in the second with another run from Summers and one from junior outfielder
Daniel Curiel.
ART U's pitching came out strong with Rios back on the mound for his third appearance of the series. Rios shut down the Warriors in the first two innings, striking out two and only allowing one hit before CU scored one run in the third to come within two. Backing up Rios' performance on the mound, the ART U offense added two more runs in the fourth on another Smith double to extend their lead to 6-1. Over the course of the two games Smith scored four runs, had six hits and three runs batted in. Summers had an equally impressive day, going for five runs, five hits, and two runs batted in.
After one run in the sixth for ART U, the Warriors attempted to rally back in the bottom of the inning by adding four runs, but the Knights would hold them off to win game two 7-6.
The wins improve Academy of Art's record to 17-25 overall. The Urban Knights will return to conference play to conclude their 2019 season with a road trip to Fresno to face the Sunbirds starting Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m.
