Women's Basketball Announces 2019-20 Schedule

2019-20 Women's Basketball Schedule

SAN FRANCISCO –
Academy of Art University women's basketball has officially released its 2019-20 schedule as announced by head coach Krystle Evans. Traveling to Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, and throughout California, the Urban Knights navigate a 26-game campaign that features two matchups with each of their 11 Pacific West Conference opponents.

On Nov. 8, ART U debuts in the West Region Challenge against tournament host Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore. The Knights defeated the Wolves for their first victory of the 2018-19 season. The following afternoon, Academy of Art faces Concordia (Ore.), concluding the opening weekend versus a team that reached the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament last year. After close to a month without contests, the Urban Knights dive into PacWest play on Dec. 5 in a road matchup with Fresno Pacific. ART U then tips off its first home game of the year on Dec. 15 with Chaminade inside historic Kezar Pavilion.

"We have a well-balanced non-conference schedule in place for the upcoming season," said Evans. "Each opponent will provide us with tests we need in the early part of the season to prepare for PacWest play."

Academy of Art heads out on its final non-conference roadtrip to face two GNAC teams in Washington, starting with Central Washington on Dec. 17 before Seattle Pacific on Dec. 19. CWU went 18-11 overall last year and ended up falling to NCAA Division II West Region Championship runner-up Alaska Anchorage in the GNAC Tournament.

Two more December contests begin a four-part PacWest homestand for the Knights who get a taste of their Northern and Southern California opponents. Notre Dame de Namur (Dec. 21) and Dominican (Dec. 31) make the short trip to San Francisco then PacWest regular season champ and NCAA DII West Region champ Azusa Pacific (Jan. 2) and Concordia (Calif.) (Jan. 4) come to town. ART U has combined to go 32-10 against the Argos and Penguins historically.

"Matching up with the conference favorites early is a great test for us and will set the tone for the remainder of the season," said Evans. "The PacWest is extremely competitive. Each year, the conference gets stronger and we are extremely excited for the upcoming season."

Continuing the schedule's symmetry, Academy of Art next departs for four consecutive road games, taking on Holy Names in Oakland on Jan. 7 followed by Biola in La Mirada (Jan. 11), Point Loma in San Diego (Jan. 13), and Dominican in San Rafael (Jan. 17). The Knights then challenge PacWest Tournament champ Hawaii Pacific back inside Kezar Pavilion on Jan. 19 before traveling to Hawaii to close the month.

Rematches with Chaminade (Jan. 27) and HPU (Jan. 29) both take place in Honolulu ahead of the trip's conclusion on The Big Island at UH Hilo (Jan. 31). With campus abuzz once again at the start of the Spring semester, Academy of Art settles in for another four-game homestand when the Knights return. It kicks off with Fresno Pacific on Feb. 6 and proceeds with rematches against Biola (Feb. 8), Holy Names (Feb. 13), and UH Hilo (Feb. 15). ART U swept Holy Names last season, capping the final victory with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from guard Chanel Stuart.

The Urban Knights' second and final regular season roadtrip to Southern California sees them take on Azusa Pacific (Feb. 20) and Concordia (Feb. 22) once more before "Senior Night" back home against Point Loma on Feb. 27. ART U finishes its regular season locally at NDNU in Belmont on Feb. 29 before the PacWest Championship Tournament begins the following week (Mar. 5-7) in Azusa.
