Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Comeback Attempt For Urban Knights Falls Just Short

SAN FRANCISCO – Despite outscoring Concordia in the second half, the Academy of Art men's basketball team couldn't complete the comeback at Kezar Pavilion on Saturday, falling 70-65.

The game was tied at 59-59 with only three minutes remaining after junior guard Stefan Milivojevic hit a jumper for the Urban Knights (4-9, 2-4 PacWest), but a 3-pointer from Jalen Sanders for the Eagles (11-3, 5-0 PacWest) put CUI back on top. It was then that the Eagles would ice the game down the stretch with free throws despite a pair of ART U 3-pointers, as CUI was 6-for-9 in the closing moments of the game at the stripe.

Concordia opened on a 7-0 run, forcing the Urban Knights to call a timeout. The break would pay off, as ART U reeled off a 10-point run of their own, thanks in part to four points from junior guard Monte Lambert, to take their first lead of the game. After trading leads for rest of the half, the Eagles ended on a 9-0 run and took a 34-26 lead into the break.

In the comeback effort, the Urban Knights shot at a 44.8 percent clip from the field, including hitting four shots from downtown, but the Eagles were shooting just as well at 48 percent. ART U grabbed 18 more rebounds than Concordia (46-28), and had more production from their bench scorers (30-21), but the effort wasn't enough to get over the top.

Milivojevic had 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, and finished 7-for-10 overall with three buckets from downtown. Junior guard Victor Ruiz de Carranza snatched a team-high nine boards to go with five points, while redshirt junior guard Dante Williams paced the team with five assists.

Three Eagles scored in double figures, led by Sanders who tied Milivojevic with a game-high 19. Jamel White and Darius Lee each chipped in 11, with four of White's points coming at the free throw line over the final two minutes. Robert McCoy totaled seven rebounds to go along with seven points.

It will now be time for the Urban Knights to hit the road. They begin a four-game trip on Jan. 7 when they travel to Oakland to take on Holy Names inside Tobin Gymnasium.
