Urban Knights Split Doubleheader With Saints On Saturday

OAKLAND, Calif. – After a back-and-forth affair yesterday, the Academy of Art baseball team continued to trade shots with Saint Martin's in what would turn out to be a doubleheader split on Saturday.

The offense came alive for the Urban Knights (4-7) midway through game one of the twin bill, coming back from down three and scoring two runs in the eighth to secure the win. ART U would take an early lead in game two, but this time it would be the Saints (3-3) that would fight back for the victory. Increasing his reached base streak to 29 consecutive games was senior third baseman Thomas Delgadillo, as his streak includes his last 18 games of 2019 and all 11 games so far in 2020. He was a combined 4-for-6 on the day with two runs, an RBI, and two walks.

GAME 1 – ART U 8, SMU 5
Saint Martin's put up a run in each of the first three innings, scoring on an RBI groundout in the first before a Griffin Williams solo home run to left field in the second. The third run would score on a double into left center after a leadoff walk.

Tying the game with one swing in the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore catcher Ryan Gamboa unloaded on a three-run homer on the first pitch of the at bat. He would continue his hot start to the season by going 2-for-5 in game one, pushing his hitting streak to seven games in game one before being held hitless in game two.

The Urban Knights would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of RBI singles from junior outfielder Dominic Chavarria and Delgadillo. In the next frame the Saints would knot the game again with a run on a double steal and a double into left field producing two runs.

As is the norm in this series, ART U would go ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of doubles from junior outfielders Ty Conrad and Cannon Secrist, with the second earning Secrist an RBI. The two were among the most explosive in the lineup in game one, as Conrad was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Secrist was a perfect 4-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Two insurance runs would come across the plate in the eighth, with another double from Conrad and a single from Secrist.

Junior starting pitcher Collin Carriger would earn his first win of the season, moving his record to 1-0 with a line of five earned runs on nine hits over seven innings with five strikeouts. The save went to junior pitcher Morgan Edwards, his first of the season, allowing just one hit in two innings with two strikeouts. The loss would go to Benjamin Wadowski, with his record dropping to 0-1.

GAME 2 – SMU 7, ART U 3 (7 INNINGS)
A two-out single from Aaaron Renaud would score the first run of the game in the top of the first, but ART U would respond with a pair of two-out runs from Conrad and senior infielder Jayson Summers, the latter of which produced a 3-2 RBI single into right field.

After a scoreless second, an RBI groundout and an RBI single into center field from Williams would put the Saints on top, a lead they would not relinquish. Each team would add a run in the sixth, with Summers providing another RBI with a double into left center, but three runs from SMU in the top of the seventh would insure the victory and a split of the series.

The win went to starting pitcher Harrison Goebel for the Saints, his second of the year with three earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts. ART U junior starting pitcher Ryan Skillman was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs, only four earned, on six hits in 6.2 innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

Summers led the way at the dish in game two, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Isaac Hegamin was the top offensive threat with a 3-for-4 game with a run and three RBIs.

The series will conclude on Sunday with game four at Laney College beginning at 11 a.m.
