Doubleheader Split For ART U On Tuesday

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Academy of Art baseball team picked up its first Pacific West Conference victory of the year in a doubleheader split on Tuesday with Hawai'i Pacific. HPU needed extra frames to take game one, 8-7, but ART U ended the day on a good note with a 7-2 win in seven innings.

Extending his hitting streak to 10 games was junior outfielder Noah Daubin, as he was a combined 3-for-7 with three RBI on the day. Junior outfielder Cannon Secrist totaled four hits on the day with a pair of multi-hit games, ending up 4-for-8 with three runs.

GAME 1 – HPU 8, ART U 7 (10 Innings)
Each team scored in the first frame, but it was the Sharks that put up a crooked number, as Jake Selco delivered a bases loaded double with two outs for the first runs of the game. The Urban Knights would score once when junior infielder Thomas Delgadillo came across the plate on an Urban Knights double play.

HPU would increase its 3-1 lead by scoring once in the second on a throwing error and twice in the third after four straight hits opened the frame. Braxton Wehrle doubled down the right field line for a run, followed by an RBI single from Selco.

The fourth is when the Urban Knights would respond, scoring four times to cut the deficit down to 6-5. A single and two walks loaded the bases before junior outfielder Dominic Chavarria singled into right to score a run, followed by a bases loaded walk from Delgadillo. After a pitching change, the final two runs of the frame scored off the bat of junior outfielder Noah Daubin when he laced a single into center field.

In the sixth, each team added one run, with HPU collecting a sacrifice fly in the top half before ART U answered with an RBI single from Delgadillo.

The Urban Knights would not go down quietly at the end of the game, as ART U would knot things at 7-7 on a bases loaded walk from senior infielder Jayson Summers. However, the tie would not last long, as the Sharks tallied a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to go up 8-7 before shutting down the Urban Knights in order.

Grant Dragmire would earn his first win of the season, tossing the final 1.2 innings while allowing no hits and striking out two to collect his first win of the season. ART U senior reliever Galen Manhard would get tagged with the loss, allowing one run on one hit over 1.1. innings with two walks and one strikeout.

Four Urban Knights collected multi-hit games, led by Delgadillo who was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Daubin who was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

GAME 2 – ART U 7, HPU 2 (7 Innings)
The script was reversed in game two, as HPU would score once on a bases loaded walk in the first inning, and it was the Urban Knights with the crooked number, putting up a five-spot to get things started. Three of those runs came on one swing when junior catcher Austin LaBarber unloaded on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the left field fence. The first two runs of the frame were on RBI singles from sophomore catcher Ryan Gamboa and junior firstbaseman Vincent Lontz.

A sacrifice fly from Daubin in the second would add an insurance run, as ART U scored six unanswered before finally HPU responded on an RBI single through the left side from Matt Tsutomi in the fourth. Closing out the game with one final run was the Urban Knights, coming in the bottom of the sixth on a single from senior infielder Fabian Barcena.

Appearing in relief to earn his first victory of the season was Summers, lasting six innings while allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. HPU starter Evan Spitzer was charged with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with only one strikeout, dropping his record to 1-3.

LaBarber ended game two 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI thanks to the big home run, while Secrist notched another pair of hits with a 2-for-3 game with two runs.

ART U will close out the series with HPU tomorrow at 6 p.m. from Laney College when the Urban Knights go for the series split.
