Quick Pair Of Goals Gives FPU Edge Over ART U

SAN FRANCISCO – A scoreless match midway through the first frame would quickly find scoring on Saturday, as a pair of Fresno Pacific goals just under 10 minutes apart would give FPU all it needed during its 3-1 Pacific West Conference win over Academy of Art men's soccer despite the first career goal from sophomore midfielder Kendryx Soriano

Both first-half goals came on nearly identical plays by the Sunbirds (4-5-0, 2-2-0 PacWest), as Fresno Pacific would work the ball up the right wing of the pitch before sending a cross into the middle of the box to a waiting Sunbird who was able to convert for a goal. The first came in the 29th minute when Angel Alvardo sent a ball into Fellipe Souza, who settled the ball with his foot before beating the ART U keeper to his right. Shortly after in the 30th minute was a similar looking play, with Gabriel Monteiro sending a ball into the box that was finished with the head of Taran Williams.

Fresno Pacific would strike once more in the 60th minute from Allen Escalante when he was setup on the doorstep of the goal after a steal from Marley Edwards, increasing their lead to 3-0. Not going away quietly, the Urban Knights (0-9-1, 0-5-0 PacWest) were able to generate seven shots in the second half (nine overall), putting three of their looks on goal. One of those chances would result in the marker from Soriano, as he becomes the fourth Urban Knight to record a goal this season. Soriano was the beneficiary of a rebound after junior midfielder Breki Einarsson played a ball into the middle that deflected off of FPU goalkeeper Matteo Swensen, dropping right in the middle of the box for the power strike by Soriano.

ART U would end with a total of nine shots by the end of the match, with those looks coming from the boot of seven different Urban Knights, led by two apiece from Einarsson and senior forward Adrian Cekala. Sophomore midfielder Gilly Miller, ART U's leading shot taker, would put his only chance on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Omer Tal turned in a respectable effort, as he produced seven saves on a total of 30 shots faced.

Academy of Art will get the chance to rebound when they return to the pitch on Oct. 23 when they travel to Southern California to take on Concordia.
