SAN DIEGO -- Academy of Art men's soccer and Point Loma were seconds away from a scoreless first half in Saturday's Pacific West Conference matchup when the Sea Lions struck for what would end up being the game-winning goal in a 2-0 final that finished with ART U out-shooting PLNU 4-3 in attempts on frame.
Point Loma (5-2-1, 2-0-0 PacWest) came out attacking, but a bit overzealous as the Sea Lions were called for offside four times in the first 15 minutes. As things settled down a major scoring opportunity instead came for the Urban Knights (0-6-1, 0-2-0 PacWest) who had senior defender
Armando Rivera and senior forward
Adrian Cekala each put shots low and into the gloves of PLNU goalkeeper Seth Ketterer within 11 seconds of one another. Though junior defender
Edvard Edvardsson added one more stopped attempt to the bottom right in the 43rd minute, it was Point Loma who connected for the match's first goal on a shot by Kyle Hoh just six seconds from the halftime horn.
Amid numerous whistles for offside from both teams, PLNU managed to tally its second goal, a connection from Teague Anderson to Corey Lundeen, in the 62nd minute. Sophomore midfielder
Gilly Miller was the focal point of the offense for the remainder of the contest as one of his three attempts necessitated a save in the 74th minute. Unfortunately for ART U, regulation elapsed before a shot found the back of the net and the Sea Lions ended in front 2-0.
Back in the friendly confines of Paul Goode Field for the first action in nearly a month, Academy of Art hosts its first PacWest contest on Friday, Oct. 8 with UH Hilo in town for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
