SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Academy of Art women's soccer couldn't keep up with the hot start by Dominican in their Pacific West Conference match on Thursday, as the Penguins scored twice in the first half to earn a win on its home turf by a final of 2-0.
While the Urban Knights (2-11-2, 1-9-0 PacWest) ended up putting half of their six shots on net by the end of the match, it was Dominican (4-8-3, 3-6-0 PacWest) that controlled much of the play, scoring on each of their first two shots. The first tally came in the 12th minute by Katie Blanchi when she headed a ball home after a cross by Abbie Gould, and was followed up in the 23rd minute with a rebound goal from Alejandra Melendez to add cushion to their lead.Â
Making five second-half saves was senior goalkeeper
Dru Keizer, giving the Knights a chance to remain close as they searched for the equalizer. Leading the way in shots was freshman midfielder
Zineb Ighirri, putting one of her two chances on goal, while both graduate student midfielder
Melissa Wilson and junior defender
Avica Robings each put their lone shot attempt on frame.Â
