Wilson Nearly Triple-Doubles But SJSU Bests ART U 62-49

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Leading NCAA Division I San Jose State early on, Academy of Art women's basketball found itself within four points of the Spartans midway through the third quarter then outscored SJSU in the fourth on Wednesday inside Provident Credit Union Event Center, but the home team wound up prevailing by a final score of 62-49. Leading the way from tip-off, freshman forward/center Alisha Wilson finished three blocks shy of the program's first triple-double in her first collegiate start.

Immediately impressing, Wilson was responsible for the Urban Knights' first two scores which came after her block and steal and, after Krupa added consecutive baskets, ART U was quickly out to an 8-3 lead. The Spartans, however, proceeded to come back with an 11-1 to close the opening quarter up 17-11.

Junior guard Chanel Stuart knocked down a 3-pointer in the first two minutes of the second to break up what turned into a 10-0 run by SJSU. The gap was closed to 22-18 after graduate student guard Joy Krupa scored on an offensive rebound and junior guard Lauryn Manns converted off a steal. Wilson's layup in the final two minutes gave Academy of Art 11 first half points off nine turnovers while cutting the San Jose State lead to what would be 27-20 at halftime.

After the sides traded baskets to begin the third, freshman guard Alyssa Munn nailed a 3-pointer and Wilson followed with a fastbreak score off Stuart's steal to make it just a four-point game at 33-29 with over five minutes left. Unfortunately, SJSU again closed a quarter strong with a 12-1 run to eventually hold its largest lead of the night at 49-34 moving to the fourth.

Freshman guard Brooke Rodgers' triple and, following Wilson blocks on three straight possessions, Manns' layup had the margin down to 10 shortly into the fourth, but the Spartans were able to maintain in the minutes that ensued. Layups from Wilson and Rodgers under the four-minute mark brought the Knights to within nine at 56-47, but San Jose State would hold on for a 62-49 win at the final buzzer.

Now 2-3 overall this season, Academy of Art was led by Wilson's season-highs of 16 points, on 8-for-10 shooting from the field, and seven blocks to tie the ART U single-game record along with 10 rebounds to give her double-digit boards in four of her first five games. Never coming off the court in 40 minutes, Krupa delivered 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists while Rodgers had seven points.

For the 3-3 Spartans, Cydni Lewis and Stephanie Torres each had 12 points with the former adding a team-high six rebounds.

The Urban Knights will be back in action against another California Collegiate Athletics Association opponent in Sonoma State this Saturday, Nov. 27 at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park beginning with a 2 p.m. tip-off.
