DALY CITY, Calif. – The home debut for Academy of Art women's tennis at the Bay Club SF Tennis (South SF) saw numerous sets that could have gone either way, but Fresno Pacific ended up having the edge on each occasion in a 5-2 victory for the visitors on Saturday afternoon.
Doubles play between the Urban Knights (1-2) and the Sunbirds (1-3) came down to a tie-breaker at the top spot following 6-4 victories for freshmen
Julia Ortega and
Erica Hellbe and Alice Marques and Daimy Paula at two and three respectively. FPU's Mariia Borodii and Lea Falentin went the distance with the sophomore tandem of
Sofia Ragona and
Yun "Nicole" Shiau, but the point wound up in Fresno Pacific's hands by way of a 7-5 tie-breaker.
Despite a 6-1, 6-2 win for Ortega over Daimy Paula at #6, the Sunbirds remained ahead until freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci evened the match at 2-2 following her 7-5, 6-2 victory versus Alice Di Matteo in the third position. Tie-breakers were again needed in the first two spots, however, both went to FPU with Borodii prevailing over Ragona 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and Falentin topping Shiau 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The match was in hand for Fresno Pacific, but one more win emerged in the fifth slot with Sanne Brull outlasting freshman
