Strong Offense Helps Knights Shutout Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – A goal in the seventh minute from junior midfielder Breki Einarsson allowed Academy of Art men's soccer to play with a lead for the entire game, and after an insurance tally in the 73rd minute on a beauty of a strike from sophomore forward Gilly Miller, ART U would notch the 2-0 shutout win over the Penguins in Pacific West Conference action on Sunday.

"We had a set back in the last two games but today it was great to see the lads getting back to winning ways," said ART U Head Coach Seamus Wisely. "Their reaction in the game, the intensity, the hard work under high pressure, every player working for one another, that's what makes a solid team."

The tally from Einarsson came on the first shot of the match for the Urban Knights (3-2-0, 3-2-0 PacWest) thanks to a nice assist from senior forward Adrian Cekala. Freshman midfielder Elvis Mensah worked the ball up the left side of the pitch before sending a ball into the middle onto the foot of Cekala, who after faking a shot would swing the ball to Einarsson on the right side of the box for his first marker of the season. Four more shots were launched by the Knights towards the Dominican (1-3-0, 1-3-0 PacWest) net, all of which were saved by goalkeeper Alejandro Reyes. While the Penguins took three shots of their own, only one of them was on target, with senior goalkeeper Davis King making the save.

ART U ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, posting eight more shots in the second frame, but none more important than that of Miller's insurance goal. After a contested header, Miller was able to track down the ball to make a move by a defender, and with a Penguin nearly on his back ripped a shot from 25 yards and buried it into the left portion of the net. It was one of the 10 shots on net by the Urban Knights, as they dominated the shot battle.

Earning his first shutout of the season was King, his first since a 1-0 win last season on Oct. 19, 2019 against Saint Katherine. Miller led all shot takers with four, three of which were on net, ending his day with his second goal of the season. Cekala finished the match with three shots of his own, and an assist on the Einarsson goal.

ART U looks to close out the season on a two-match win streak when they host Holy Names for senior day on Friday at 10 a.m.
