Senior Day Triumph Sees Women's Soccer Best HNU 5-1

SAN FRANCISCO – Following a pre-match ceremony to honor its lone non-returning senior, goalkeeper Lara Pflicke, Academy of Art women's soccer proceeded to break out for its highest scoring performance of the year in a 5-1 Pacific West Conference victory over Holy Names at Paul Goode Field on Friday. Junior forward Brooklyn Morera's two goals led the way while three other Urban Knights contributed goals in the win to end the season.

Dominating its offensive half of the field from the outset, ART U (2-4, 2-4 PacWest) took five shots and had four corner kicks before putting its first goal on the board against the Hawks (0-3, 0-3 PacWest). In the 21st minute, a quick counterattack led to a ball crossed perfectly to the foot of junior forward Baylie Christensen who put away the goal as she flew across the right side of the goal.

It was not until the 31st minute that Holy Names attempted its first shot and that ended up being one of the two saves for Pflicke in her first half of action. Following a shot attempt that ricocheted back off the crossbar, a header by Morera helped her team go ahead 2-0 in the 38th minute, however, Academy of Art was not finished in the opening period. Shortly before halftime in the 44th minute, a free kick was nearly scored by sophomore defender Katie Williams, but it ended up being junior defender Avica Robings who crashed in for her first goal of the season.

Holy Names found the net with a score of their own in the 48th minute only to see ART U's offense continue to surge as Morera struck again from the right corner of the box in the 73rd minute. Junior midfielder Reyna Valencia then notched her first goal of 2021 four minutes later off another ricocheted shot right in front of the goal. When the final whistle blew, Academy of Art had completed its season sweep of Holy Names with a 5-1 victory.

Ironically, the five goals were the most since the Urban Knights' 2019 senior day win over Fresno Pacific on Nov. 2, 2019. The two goals and one assist rose Morera to fourth in program history with 26 career points as well as fifth with nine career goals.
