OAKLAND, Calif. – Outside of the game's first bucket, Academy of Art women's basketball never trailed Dominican in Saturday's 80-60 victory to close the Pacific West Conference season inside Holy Names' Tobin Gymnasium. After successfully fending off comebacks throughout, ART U outscored the Penguins 21-8 in a truly dominant fourth quarter. All eight Urban Knights scored for the second consecutive contest with five of those student-athletes reaching double figures led by junior guard
Chanel Stuart who hit six 3-pointers all in the fourth quarter for 18 points off the bench.
"I'm so proud of the level of intensity we played with," said Head Coach
Krystle Evans. "This was our most consistent performance of the season from an intensity standpoint."
Following several ties in the early going, Academy of Art finished the first quarter up by four points thanks to a three-point play from junior guard
Lauryn Manns and a layup via junior guard/forward
Ladun Akako.
The margin did not surpass four points for the first half of the second quarter until a triple by redshirt freshman guard
Kaila Murrell combined with back-to-back layups from freshman guard
Brooke Rodgers (one that became a three-point play). Racking up their fastbreak points thereafter, ART U built a 38-31 advantage at the half.
Dominican started the third quarter determined and a 9-2 burst subsequently tied things up at 40-40. Senior forward
Megan Jefferson then converted two layups to help her team up its lead back to seven points and there it stood heading to the fourth after freshman guard
Alyssa Munn made it 59-52 with a 3-pointer in the final minute.
Any hope the Penguins had for a comeback was quickly ended after Stuart incredibly knocked down six triples in the first seven minutes of the fourth. By the time her sixth touched the bottom of the net, Academy of Art was up by more than 20 points and, after holding Dominican to just 14 percent shooting from the field in the quarter, the scoreboard naturally read 80-60 with ART U on top.
"In the fourth quarter, we did a good job of limiting Dominican to one contested shot and converting," Evans said. "We take pride in our conditioning and expect to go into another gear in the fourth. I was particularly proud of Chanel; she had a challenging week of practice, embraced it, and had a fantastic fourth quarter. She's tough as nails."
Dominican drops to 1-6 overall and in conference play with the day's result despite a game-high 23 points plus 13 rebounds from Riley Friauf.
Finishing its regular season at 3-4 overall and in PacWest play, ART U had production up and down the roster with Stuart's 18 points coming on a 6-for-10 shooting effort from long range along with 11 rebounds for her second double-double. Rodgers scored a season-high with 16 points plus eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists while Munn stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a season-best five steals. Manns and Murrell were the other two Knights to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points and 10 points respectively.
"This season was challenging mentally and emotionally for our entire roster," Evans said. "The resilient spirit of the eight women on this year's roster is one I will never forget. We have a strong core and are excited to continue to build off this season. Tenacious defenders, versatile scorers, and the heart of a lion describes the women on this team. We play hard and celebrate each other even harder. I look forward to continuing this journey with such quality people."
