PacWest Athletes of the Week (Apr. 6)
IRVINE, Calif. – Performances that were historic within both the Academy of Art and NCAA Division II landscapes at the
APU Invitational led
Marie-Jeanne Ourega and
Elliot Slade to be named Pacific West Conference Women's Field and Men's Track Athlete of the Week respectively. The awards are for meets taking place between Mar. 29 - Apr. 4.
Surpassing the Outdoor Nationals automatic qualifying standard in her first long jump attempt, Ourega soared to a 21-7.25 (6.58m) distance which put her fourth among all-conditions marks in the history of NCAA DII. The mark, which did carry a +2.1 wind, put her first in the nation by more than eight inches and remains second in program history. A busy day for the native of L'Haÿ-les-Roses, France saw her first triple jump of the season hit the Outdoor Nationals provisional standard at 39-4.5 (12.00m) and slotted her in at fifth in ART U history.
Much like he did during the
indoor season, Slade's outdoor 800m debut was a record-breaking one. His first outdoor competition for Academy of Art put him first ART U history with a 1:49.78 that was a little over a second better than the previous top time. The Outdoor Nationals provisional qualifier opened at sixth in the country.
This is the second PacWest weekly honor for Ourega this season and the first for Slade in his career. Ourega was previously awarded on
Mar. 23 along with
Ajani Ince.
