Knights Level Match Early, Eagles Win After Answering

SAN FRANCISCO – The third goal of the season from redshirt sophomore midfielder Elvis Mensah brought Academy of Art men's soccer level with Biola early in the first half, but three unanswered goals lifted BU to the 4-1 Pacific West Conference victory on Thursday.

Seeking to match the first goal of the game scored by the Eagles (3-3-3, 2-0-0 PacWest) in the 21st minute when Matteo Napoletano redirected a chance near the net, Mensah stepped up to answer the call for the Urban Knights (3-7-1, 0-4-0 PacWest) as he delivered a jumping header goal, finishing off a one-touch cross from junior midfielder Gilly Miller that was originally set up by senior midfielder William Mychaltchouk.

Each team would generate just one more shot despite plenty of offensive chances until Biola stepped back in front in the 42nd minute, with Ethan Hardin netting in the game-winning goal when he flicked an attempt past the goalkeeper after a long overhead pass from Jakob Schnitzler.

After topping ART U in shot chances during the first half, BU continued the trend in the second frame to ultimately lead the category, 15-10. The eight shots on goal for the Eagles resulted in a pair of second-half goals, setting the tone out of halftime with a marker in the 48th minute by Napoletano, his second of the day. Adding the final tally in the 90th minute was Adam Jones.

Mensah has now earned a point in each of his past three matches, telling two goals and one assist over that span (five points). He remains the only Urban Knight to record more than one goal this campaign, sitting just two behind the team leader Miller (five). With the assist, Miller continues to increase his yearly point point as he is now up to 14 on the campaign. Dating back to last season, Miller has 21 points over his previous 16 matches (seven goals, seven assists).

Matching his season high in saves was ART U senior goalkeeper Davis King, making four stops in the game just as he did back in the season opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Academy of Art will look to rebound next time on the pitch when they take on the Cougars of Azusa Pacific this Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.Â
