SAN FRANCISCO – Playing through a scoreless draw in the first half between Academy of Art men's soccer and Concordia, the final 45 minutes saw a foursome of goals that came primarily from one side. Though senior midfielder
William Mychaltchouk tallied the first goal on a powerful strike in the 52nd minute, three unanswered Concordia goals proved to be too much to battle back from as CUI took a 3-1 Pacific West Conference victory.
It took long into the second half for it to happen, but Mychaltchouk broke through the deadlock for the Urban Knights (3-12-3, 0-9-1) when he provided a laser of the shot towards the goal, originally set up by a brilliant back heel pass from junior midfielder
Gilly Miller. A perfect location, Mychaltchouk's shot had no chance at being stopped for the early lead, and was his first tally since he scored
earlier this season against Cal Poly Humboldt on Sept. 12.
Seeking the equalizer, the Eagles (7-9-2, 6-3-1 PacWest) found it just moments later in the 54th minute, with Miguel Pena adding onto the lead by beating the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. Later in the half, Kevin Sanchez netted what became the game-winning goal as he scored off a header in the 69th minute, while Anthony Morales added an insurance goal in the 79th minute for the 3-0 final.
While each team kept it level in the first half with seven shots apiece, the script was flipped in the second half, as the Eagles produced 22 scoring opportunities during the second frame to the 10 shots of the Knights for an overall lead of 29-17.
Making a number of great saves to keep the Knights in the match was senior goalkeeper
Davis King, including coming up with a stop on a crucial penalty-kick opportunity. Fittingly enough on Senior Day, King finished his collegiate career with a 2022 season high in saves with 10, only one shy of his career high that
he set against Fresno Pacific in Nov. 2019. The team leader in shots was Miller and senior midfielder
Christian Schaffner, as they took four shots apiece while four different Urban Knights each chipped in a pair of shots each.
Prior to the match, ART U honored the career of seven Urban Knight seniors in
Logi Saemundsson,
Fannar Omarsson,
Jose "JJ" Cortez,
Christian Schaffner,
Breki Einarsson,
Davis King and
Gilli Kristjansson. King leaves in numerous ART U career top-10 lists, while Kristjansson has now played in the most matches in program history.
