TUCSON, Ariz. – Just two runs separated Academy of Art softball and Washburn through the first three innings of their matchup on Sunday, but the Ichabods ended up rallying late for a 9-0 win on the final day of the Montana State Billings Desert Stinger from Lincoln Park.
In the two teams' first-ever meeting, Washburn put up a pair of runs in the first inning on a trio of hits, but ART U would immediately threaten in their half of the frame with hard-earned walks to senior utility
Alyssa Rasmussen and senior catcher/infielder
Lauryn Henderson. Though they did not score, the tandem combined to see 15 pitches out of the gate.
Freshman pitcher
Julia Jordan (0-4) limited the Ichabods to just singular hits in the second and third innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam from a pair of walks in the latter. Senior catcher
Alyssa Brundage notched a single in the second, but the Washburn offense later broke through when two doubles began the fourth and a home run followed prior to four more scores in the fifth, leading to the 9-0 result.
Academy of Art drops to 0-10 overall this season and saw Brundage finish 1-for-2 while Rasmussen and Henderson each walked once.
Washburn moves up to 3-6 on the year with Autymn Schreiner's 3-for-4 effort yielding three runs batted in and Jaycee Ginter (2-1) picking up the win with one hit and no runs allowed plus seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
With its first two tournaments complete, ART U will now settle into non-conference doubleheaders with its first coming at Sonoma State on Feb. 16.
